About Dupré Library

Edith Garland Dupré Library is centrally located on campus and offers over 1,500,000 print and electronic titles. The Library is open to everyone to explore its wealth of resources, including books, periodicals, online materials, archival collections, U.S. government information, non-traditional items, and more. Research librarians are available to assist users in person and via chat, text, or email. Interlibrary loan services are offered for materials not owned by the Library. Users can access computer labs and a variety of study spaces for individual or group work, all designed to support academic success. Special Collections, which include materials related to the Acadiana region, provide unique resources for research.

Mission

The mission of Edith Garland Dupré Library, as an integral part of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, is to support fully the instructional and research programs of the University by providing access to information through the teaching, acquisition, organization, and preservation of information resources in all formats to the University's academic community, the region, and the state.

Edith Garland Dupré Library, centrally located on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, is an essential component of the academic and creative life of the institution. An expert and responsive staff will interact with students, faculty, and staff at multiple points in their research, teaching, learning, and publishing by providing high quality, innovative services. By creating a welcoming physical and virtual space, the library will be an active and vibrant part of the University academic community. Edith Garland Dupré Library will continue to collect, preserve, and display the history and culture of the University as well as the community, the region, and the state.

Who Was Edith Garland Dupré?

Edith Garland Dupré was born in 1881 in Opelousas, Louisiana. She was educated at Sophie Newcomb Memorial College for Women in New Orleans, graduating in 1900. In 1901, she joined a small faculty of eight at the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, which later became the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Serving as a professor and head of the English Department, she was also the chair of the Library Committee. Dupré was responsible for the library for 23 years and directed its policies for an additional 20 years. In recognition of her dedication, the campus library was named in her honor in 1962.
