The Ernest J. Gaines Center would like to invite you to hear Dr. Phebe Archon Hayes deliver a lecture on Dr. Emma Wakefield Pailett, the first female Black doctor in Iberia Parish. Dr. Hayes’s lecture will be on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Gaines Center Hallway, on the 3rd floor.

Dr. Hayes is the president of the Iberia African American Historical Society. She also served the University of Louisiana at Lafayette: first as a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and as Dean of the College of General Studies. Dr. Hayes was instrumental in establishing a historical marker in New Iberia’s historical district commemorating Dr. Wakefield Pailett’s accomplishments. In addition to her achievements as an academic, historian and genealogist, Dr. Hayes was awarded a 2019 Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities Rebirth Grant.

The Ernest J. Gaines Center was established in 2010 and houses the manuscripts of Dr. Ernest J. Gaines. For more information regarding the center, its hours, research and future programs, contact Cheylon Woods at (337) 482-1848 or cheylon.woods@louisiana.edu
