Dr. Ora-Westley Schwemmer Cady (1935-2014) was from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she received her bachelor’s degree in history from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and received her doctorate in Latin American history from Tulane University.  From 1963 until her retirement in 1996, she taught in the History Department at the University of Southwestern Louisiana. She was a known traveler to go almost anywhere. She has been to places such as, Mexico, Central America, The Caribbean, Africa, and China, just to name a few. She spoke Spanish and French and read Portuguese and Latin.

She was the American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) Area Representative for International Relations from 1979 to 1983. Because of this she was given a position on the AAUW Board of Directors, the Program Development Committee, and the Association Legislative Program Committee. She served on the AAUW Educational Foundation Board of Directors from 1981 to 1983.

The Ora-Westley S. Cady Papers documents Dr. Cady’s AAUW service from 1975 through 1986. Its focus is on program development and implementation. It includes Board of Directors’ records of both AAUW and the AAUW Educational Foundation, committee records, convention planning, personal and organizational correspondence, and materials reflecting Cady’s work with AAUW Regions and Divisions.
