Stephan, John E. (1919-1998). Photograph Collection, 1951-1995

John E. Stephan was a native and lifelong resident of Lafayette, the son of the late John Louis Stephan and former Jeanne Dupuis. He was a 1941 graduate of SLI (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), majoring in history education. While at SLI, he was a member of Alpha Omega Fraternity. He served during World War II and Korea as a captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was married to the former Beulah Dupré of Lafayette. They have one daughter and two sons.

He was a commercial photographer for 53 years, having retired in April 1998. Mr. Stephan took ID photos and sports photos for SLI and USL from 1946 to the early 1990s. He took pictures at Mardi Gras Balls such as the Order of the Troubadors Town House Ball, Krewe of Gabriel City Ball, and others. He was a former member of the Lafayette Town House, Krewe of Gabriel, Oakbourne Country Club and the Lafayette Petroleum Club. He was a member of the Masonic Order that included Hope Lodge No. 145 F. & A.M. – Past Master and 50-year Member. He was Senior Past Commander, Payen Commandery No. 16, Knights Templar, Past Illustrious Master, Jack L. Stephan Council No. 24, Cryptic Masons, Past High Priest, Robert H. Cage Chapter No. 56, Royal Arch Masons, Knight of York Cross of Honor, and former member of Jerusalem Shrine Temple.

This collection consists of his photograph collection.
