Collection 1

University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Archives, 1896-

This is the initial and largest collection in the Archives. It contains the historical records of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette from its inception. This collection provides the fullest insights into the development of the University from its legislative founding in 1898 as Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute to its present status as the second largest university in the state.

Voorhies Family. Papers, 1847-1976, 2009, n.d.

Papers of a southern Louisiana family. Chiefly the papers of Albert Voorhies (1829-1913) who served as state Lieutenant Governor (1865-1867) among other elected positions, and longtime member of the State Bar. The papers reflect his interest in state politics, his involvement in the court system especially of Orleans Parish, and his writings on legal theory and state legal practices. Also material on other members of the Voorhies family. Donated by the George Voorhies Family, St. Martinville, Louisiana.

Watson Family. Papers, 1793-1930

Correspondence, financial and legal records of several families from the Port Gibson, Mississippi region. Among the themes reflected in the collection are the Presbyterian Church and its activities in Mississippi, economic pursuits especially plantation management, relations with African Americans as both enslaved people and freedmen, and health concerns including recurring yellow fever epidemics. Also included are the papers of Major J. W. Watson, U. S. Army (ca. 1865-1920) who served in Indian Wars and as an Indian agent during the 1890s and in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. He wrote about the Cuban Revolution of 1917. He also wrote some virulently anti-German pieces during World War I. The collection was donated by Dalton Watson of Waterproof, Louisiana.

This collection contains legal documents from the Attakapas Post at Opelousas, Louisiana (1772-1812) and clippings, broadsides and circulars on Louisiana politics, especially the 1932 election. Donated by John Mills of Opelousas, Louisiana.

Debaillon, Paul (1890-1948). Collection, 1852-1957, n.d.

This collection reflects Paul Debaillon's interest in genealogy, especially the family of Jean Mouton, the founder of Vermilionville, now Lafayette, Louisiana. The collection contains extensive notes and charts compiled by the genealogist and much correspondence written in his attempt to gather information. There is also material on co-lateral families such as Debaillon, Dupré, and others.; papers of Mary Swords Debaillon, who was actively engaged in gathering, cataloging, and preserving Louisiana flowering plants; and scattered correspondence, political and judicial records of Charles Homère Mouton. There is even a very small collection of Paul Debaillon personal papers, almost all of which date from the 1930s. Charles Debaillon and Mrs. C.E. Hamilton donated this collection in 1956.

Givens-Hopkins Families. Papers, 1823-1962, n.d.

Mainly personal correspondence among members of the families of John S. Givens and Thomas B. Hopkins who lived in Louisiana and Texas. Included also are records concerning lands held by the Givens family in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Of special note in the correspondence are accounts of travel or work assignments abroad: Mattie Hopkins Williams in the Middle East (1910) and Japan (1920); Lyle Givens in Europe (1929); John S. Givens in Alaska (1935) and Czechoslovakia (1946); Lyle Givens Williams in Latin America (1943-1944); Agnes Givens Gercke in Japan (1946-1952); and Anna H. Givens in Japan (1950-1952). Other letters mention the Corpus Christi flood of 1919, the death of Will Rogers and Willey Post in 1935, and the controversy between the DAR and Marion Anderson in 1939. Mainly business papers of McGowan, a dentist, druggist, banker, merchant and civic leader in Jeanerette, Louisiana. Included are some articles on Jeanerette written by Florence Bussey McGowan; diaries kept by her relatives in Mississippi in 1876; a claim for property destroyed or confiscated by Union soldiers in Jackson, Mississippi in 1863; and a record book for the Sans Souci Club of Jeanerette, 1885-1887.

Three separate series of documents collected by Marshall. First, several 19th-century legal documents from Great Britain written on sheepskin. Second, miscellaneous financial reports of the Castillo family of New Orleans and St. Martinville, 1837-1897. There are also several items of correspondence. Fletcher, Joel L., Jr. (1897-1972). Papers, 1862-1979, n.d.

Fletcher was an educator in Louisiana for over fifty years. Most of that time he was at Southwestern Louisiana Institute/University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), including twenty years as President. Includes Louisiana history material; items on Acadian vigilante committees; William Wyatt of Vernon, Louisiana business records; information on agriculture and industrial development. Also included are records of the College of Agriculture while Fletcher taught, especially during the 1930s; his correspondence as Dean; correspondence of other members of the department; the records of the Southwestern Agriculturist and the Mid-Winter Fair; etc. This collection was donated by Joel Lafayette Fletcher, Jr.

Joel Fletcher was an educator in Louisiana for over 50 years. Most of that time he was at the Southwestern Louisiana Institute/University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette)—20 years as President. This collection includes material he collected on Louisiana history, education, agriculture and industrial development; family correspondence; and Fletcher's writings.

This collection, containing personal and business correspondence of the Henry Rees family of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana reflects life from about the mid-nineteenth century to the twentieth century. It deals with family life, illness (such as yellow fever), community life, agriculture, finances, taxes, legal matters and attitudes and opinions on contemporary events. Included also are the legal papers of Henry Rees generated while he served as Justice of the Peace in St. Martin Parish and Orderly Sergeant in the Militia. This collection was donated by Henry Rees and George W. Marshall.

Joseph Anthony Riehl was a long time participant in the SLI/USL (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) community. He taught history and served at various times as Registrar, Dean of Men, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dean of Administration, and Dean of the University. These papers focus on various portions of Riehl's career in academia.

Paul Butterfield Freeland was a pastor of Presbyterian churches in Opelousas and Covington, Louisiana, as well as a genealogist and historian. This collection contains a large number of photographs and printed material on the cultivation and manufacturing of rice. Many of the photographs show rice farming, irrigation, equipment, and milling in the Crowley, Louisiana region.

William M. Reid was a rice miller, president, and executive vice president of the Rice Millers Association. This collection consists of minutes of the advisory council, articles, and reports on the rice industry. Also included are the Rice Millers Association newsletters and other miscellaneous materials. Collection 20

Williams, Espy (1852-1908). Collection, 1865-1908, 1969

Espy Williams was one of Louisiana's best-known playwrights of the latter 19th and early 20th century. This collection centers on the literary career of Espy Williams. It contains news clippings (primarily reviews), flyers and ads for Williams's works, a few photographs, correspondence, two diaries, poetry, essays, librettos, and plays by Williams. Eunice Simonds Osgood (Mrs. Phillips E.) of Summit, New Jersey donated this collection.

Planter, politician, delegate to the secession convention in Montgomery, Alabama, and member of the Confederate Congress, of St. Martinville, Louisiana. Chiefly correspondence (1850-1865) of DeClouet in the Civil War era. Includes correspondence with his son Paul, a student at the University of Virginia and a Confederate officer.

Henri Louis Ducrocq was a physician who practiced in Lafayette, Louisiana. This collection includes biographical data and school notebooks which were written almost exclusively in French.

South Louisiana Camellia Society. Records, 1944-1970s

The South Louisiana Camellia Society existed from 1945 to 1965. Its major activity was an annual show usually held in conjunction with the Camellia Pageant held at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). There are also documents from two Shreveport nurseries which were involved with importing camellias from abroad between 1935 and 1941. The collection was donated by the South Louisiana Camellia Society.

Griffin, Lucile Meredith Mouton (1889-1983). Collection, 1798-1967

This collection reflects both the work of Lucile Mouton Griffin and her husband, Harry L. Griffin, and her interest in Mouton family history. Contains scrapbooks kept by Mrs. Griffin before her marriage including her years as a student at Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), and material from her graduate school work at the University of Chicago and Columbia University; photographs of Lafayette (many used to illustrate H. L.Griffin's Attakapas Country), with explanatory notes; and an extensive postcard collection. The collection deals with the Mouton family, especially Mrs. Griffin's father, Alexander Mouton (1853-1938), an engineer who worked in Latin America and owned a sugar refinery for a time. His collection includes an autobiography, correspondence, and large clipping and postcard scrapbooks. This collection contains material on other members of the Mouton family dating back to Jean Mouton in 1798. Among these items are artifacts owned by Governor Alexander Mouton (1804-1885), Mrs. Griffin's great-grandfather. Donated by Lucile M. Griffin, Lafayette, Louisiana.

Williams, David R. (1890-1962). Papers, 1847-1986, n.d.

Williams was an architect, a government official, a city planner, a bon vivant and a Texan. Interests in architecture and engineering honed through work in a railroad foundry and correspondence study were developed at the University of Texas at Austin. Williams toured Europe in the early 1920s where he furthered his education in architecture and acquired a notable rare book collection which specialized in Renaissance architecture. Williams returned from Europe and established an architectural practice in Dallas, Texas, in 1924. During the next nine years, he evolved a style which borrowed heavily from pioneer Texas buildings which he called the "indigenous architecture." During World War II Williams worked with war housing where he made pioneering efforts in the field of prefabrication. From 1945 until his retirement in 1951 Williams worked for a number of government agencies planning hospitals, designing tropic and arctic housing, and developing special housing projects in Venezuela. This collection reflects the life and work of Williams, his wife, Lyle and his daughter, Davida. Williams was an avid amateur photographer so the collection contains an extensive subsection of photographs.

Ira Schreiber Nelson was a horticulturist and long-time member of the Horticulture Department at Southwestern Louisiana Institute/University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). He was extremely active in various horticulture societies on the state and national level.
The collection reflects his varied interests and wide-spread activities. Barbara Nelson, his wife, was the long-time secretary of the Louisiana Society for Horticultural Research, and some of her records in this office are in the collection. Barbara Nelson donated this collection.

Dr. Harry Lewis Griffin was a long-time dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). This collection consists of Dr. Griffin’s personal papers, including writings, speeches, correspondence, and materials he collected reflecting his interest in south Louisiana history, political science, education, and civic affairs. H.L. Griffin and Lucile M. Griffin donated this collection.

This collection contains literary material of Ernest Jackson Whisler, a turn-of-the-century writer of plays and folk stories under the name of Jack Whisler. His career appears to span the first half of the 20th century. Lois Whisler of Tucson, Arizona, with the aid of Paul Nolan, donated this collection.

The Rice Millers Association (RMA) is a private, non-profit, national trade association of the rice milling industry. It is one of the oldest agricultural organizations in the United States. The collection contains correspondence, reports, minutes, contracts, government, and miscellaneous materials related to the U.S. rice milling industry and the organization.

Vernon Wharton was a historian, sociologist, and administrator at Millsaps College, Texas State College of Women, and Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). This collection consists of biographical material, correspondence, writings and speeches, lecture notes, clippings, and other materials. Several of these works reference African Americans, the South, Reconstruction, and American, European, and Latin American history.

The New Orleans Botanical Garden was established in City Park, New Orleans, to develop a living collection of woody plants, both native and exotic. This collection contains correspondence, minutes of the Arboretum Committee, reports, constitution and by-laws. It also contains the plans for organizing the New Orleans Botanical Garden and other miscellaneous materials.

Kimbriel, Rex L. (1907-1987). Papers [Mississippi Rice Growers' Association Records], 1945-1955, n.d.

Mr. Kimbriel introduced rice production into Mississippi in 1948. After retiring from active farming he traveled throughout the country and Latin America as an advisor for rice and soybean farming. This collection contains correspondence, publications, writings and reports, scrapbooks, and other materials.

Papers of Charles Cain, Leo Hebert, and Louis Coussan. Acadiana Neuf papers consist of correspondence, descriptions of meetings, job applications, charter requests, and newspaper articles on an organization which disbursed Economic Opportunity Act funds in the War on Poverty. It covers Lafayette, Acadia, Iberia, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermilion Parishes, Louisiana, with the main office in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Charles Joseph Debaillon, Sr. was born 19 April 1879 in Lafayette. In 1914, he married Mary "May" L. Bowden. They had two children. He worked in a printing office, general merchandise store, lumber yard, Lafayette Building Association, and then became Director of the First National Bank. This collection consists of biographical information on Debaillon family, correspondence, clippings, and many family photographs.

Dupré, Edith Garland (1881-1970). Papers, 1886-1972, n.d.

Edith Garland Dupré was an educator and member of the first faculty of Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) who began the first library on campus. She remained at SLII (later Southwestern Louisiana Institute) for her entire professional career, retiring in 1944. Miss Dupré is best known as an English professor, but she also served in many other capacities including registrar and chair of the Library Committee. This collection reflects Miss Dupré's life and the high regard in which she was held by the community. It contains personal papers, material referring to the early years of the University, and letters from her brother, Congressman Henry Garland Dupré. Most of the material in this collection was donated by Edith Garland Dupré, with later additions donated by Leonder Labbe and Camille Claibourne.

Parker family; papers relating to the Ku Klux Klan in Louisiana in the 1920s, especially the Mer Rouge and the Dallas Calmes affairs; Huey Long; farming and conservation in Louisiana; and national and Louisiana politics.

Edwin Willis was a U.S. Representative from Louisiana, member of the House Judiciary Committee, and chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee. This collection contains extensive Congressional office records including correspondence, photographs, press releases, reports, scrapbooks, and other materials. Almost all series contain constituent correspondence.

The Pritchard Rice Milling Company of Houston, Texas, organized in 1907, was one of the first mills in Texas. The collection covers the business transactions of this company. The files contain administration records, external and internal correspondence, financial records, insurance records, business contracts, and equipment documentation.

Dr. Zeke L. Loflin was a faculty member and chair of the Department of Mathematics at Southwestern Louisiana Institute/University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). He was also one of the prime movers in establishing the Computer Science program. This collection contains material from the organizations he belonged to SLI/USL, the Department of Mathematics, professional associations, and fraternities.Dr. Loflin donated the collection.

Owen J. Southwell was a noted south Louisiana architect. This collection contains and extensive gathering of Southwell’s designs for homes, churches, and public buildings. Also included are general and financial records, correspondence, photographs, working files arranged by subject and title. In addition, there are drawings, sketches, and blueprints of houses/buildings he designed.

James M. Peek was an Associate Professor of Agronomy at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). He was also a charter member of the Louisiana Turf Grass Association and a member of the American Society of Agronomy. This collection consists of correspondence, photographs, literature, and other miscellaneous materials dealing with turf grass in Louisiana.

Thomas H. Harris was the Louisiana State Superintendent of Public Schools from 1908 to 1940. Founded in 1935 by Dr. Edwin Lewis Stephens, scholar, and educator, to promote the culture, distribution, and appreciation of the live oak tree. Membership in the Society was limited to individual live oaks known or suspected to be more than 100 years old. Live oaks under 100 years old were eligible for membership in the Junior League. Each member had an "attorney," usually its owner; the attorney paid the annual dues - 25 acorns! The president oak tree was over 500 years old. This Society stopped functioning in 1938 after the death of Stephens. Meigo Frost publicized the Society's revival in a Times-Picayune Sunday magazine article on January 21, 1945. Stanley C. Arthur, director of the Louisiana State Museum, took over leadership of the Society. The collection contains books, clippings, letters, photographs, notes, articles, pamphlets, bulletins, maps, and organizational records. Donated by Miss Willie Wynn White, daughter of the late H. H. White of Alexandria, Louisiana.

The Acadiana Bicentennial Celebration Association was formed in January 1954 to commemorate the expulsion of Acadians from their homeland in Acadia (present-day Nova Scotia) by the British in 1755. Dr. Thomas J. Arceneaux, Dean of the College of Agriculture at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) led this effort. Dr. Kenneth B. Hait joined the psychology department of Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1938 as the assistant head and became the head of the department the next year. He served as department head until May of 1968. This collection consists of material from classes he taught, test results, patients and experiment results, correspondence, pamphlets, and other miscellaneous materials as well.

The Mary Swords Debaillon Louisiana Iris Society was organized in 1941 under the leadership of W. B. MacMillan of Abbeville, Louisiana. The Society for Louisiana Irises donated this collection, which made UAAMC the official repository for its records.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy is the oldest heritage organization in the country, and works "to preserve the true history of the Confederacy and keep in sacred memory the brave deeds of the men of the South, with no bitterness towards the government of the United States of America.” The Lafayette Chapter was named after General Alfred Mouton. This collection includes correspondence, meeting materials, committee materials, programs from various UDC luncheons and events, yearbooks, information on Confederate veterans, and photographs from the Alfred Mouton chapter. There is much material related to the construction of the General Alfred Mouton monument located on Jefferson Street and Lee Avenue in downtown Lafayette, and news clippings regarding removing the statue. Yvonne Carter donated the collection.

This collection consists of journals that cover the years between 1908 and 1920, documenting Dr. Leonpacher's experiences in Europe, Canada, and the United States. These handwritten journals, mainly in German, are illustrated with photographs and drawings done by Leonpacher. They also contain some correspondence and other added items. Furthermore, the collection consists of digitized copies of these journals, as well as a DVD of Louisiana Air Tours. This collection was donated by Dr. Leonpacher’s widow Fanny (Mrs. John Doba), and son Robert J. Leonpacher. The diaries were digitized by Brian Butcher of Video 1 for Leslie Leonpacher, Louis’ granddaughter, who produced a documentary film on Dr. Leonpacher.

He served as a sales promotion and public relations manager of the Louisiana State Rice Company, and was well known and highly praised for his work in flower hybridization. He also was a distinguished person in the fields of education and business. This collection contains Mr. MacMillan’s correspondence and papers, mainly concerned with his work in horticulture. Sarah Daniel of Abbeville, Louisiana donated this collection in 1978.

Ollie Tucker Osborne's papers detail the activities of one of Louisiana's leading advocates of women's rights during the 1970s. Osborne was extremely active in the League of Women Voters and the Evangeline ERA coalition. She attended conferences and workshops throughout the South. She was appointed to the 1977 state women's convention in Baton Rouge and was elected a state delegate to the national convention in Houston. She helped organize and coordinate a number of workshops and conferences in Louisiana on women's rights. The papers reflect Osborne's activities in the women's movement and her career in advertising. There are several scrapbooks concerning her years in New York. The largest series contains League of Women Voters records of the local and state levels. The collection includes memos, correspondence, publicity materials (a great interest of Osborne's) and, often, photographs. Her photographs of delegates to the 1973 Constitutional Convention are probably one of the better visual sources on its participants. Ollie Tucker Osborne donated the papers as part of the Women in Louisiana Collection.

Mary Alice Fontenot was a journalist and author. She is best known for her series of children's books on Clovis Crawfish. She has also written other books for children as well as cookbooks and works on local and state history. As a journalist, she worked for many newspapers in the region including the Lafayette Advertiser, the Opelousas Daily World, and the Crowley Post-Signal. This collection focuses on her journalistic and literary career. Mary Alice Fontenot donated these papers as part of the Women in Louisiana Collection.

Zimmer, F.E. and Company. Louisiana Department of Conservation. Hearing Records, 1940-1967

For many years F. E. Zimmer and Company served as official reporters for the Louisiana Department of Conservation. The company maintained transcripts of public hearings for the siting of oil and gas drilling locations. These transcripts include testimony taken at the hearing, exhibits presented by the petitioning company, and frequently, maps of the site.
The provenance of the collection is unclear, but it was probably donated by F. E. Zimmer. Duplicates of these records are said to exist in Baton Rouge and Lake Charles.

The Louisiana Intracoastal Seaway Association (LISA), a private nonprofit organization, was created in 1958 to manage and develop Louisiana's coastal water resources. It was considered a public relations arm of the Louisiana Coastal Commission (LCC), a state-regulated agency created in 1964. LISA performed promotional and publicity functions, such as lobbying, which the LCC was restricted from doing. LCC had the authority to coordinate planning efforts in the areas of water quality, flood control, navigation, conservation of fish and wildlife resources, and environmental enhancement. This collection contains records of LISA and LCC. Material from LISA includes correspondence, Board of Directors meetings minutes, annual meeting material, speeches, scrapbooks, pamphlets, and miscellaneous items. Material from LCC include correspondence, commission meeting minutes and minute books, committees' reports, publicity and publications, legal material, and miscellaneous information. This collection is arranged chronologically. LISA donated the records for Special Collections to be its designated repository.

Ernest J. Gaines was born near New Roads, Louisiana, in 1933. Although Gaines moved to California with his family after World War II, he based much of his fiction upon his observations of life in Louisiana.
The collection consists mainly of various drafts of Mr. Gaines' published works from handwritten originals to galley proofs. It also contains unpublished stories and novels starting with those written during his college days. The unpublished materials may be consulted only with the permission of Mr. Gaines. Several scrapbooks centered on published works include reviews and correspondence. Other types of this material are unbound. There is an especially large number of reviews of the television production of The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman.

This collection consists of three films on CODOFIL and other material. These are handmade and contain taped interviews. The master film is at Pan American Films. This collection reflects the career, from 1870 on, of attorney, judge and author Felix Voorhies. It contains fee books and case books generated as part of his legal practice; however, the majority of the collection consists of manuscripts, plays, short stories, and some published Voorhies writings. There is also correspondence from the early 20th century including one letter in which the Judge writes about the Evangeline legend and the true story of Emmeline Labiche which he published as part of Acadian Reminiscences. A manuscript copy of an unpublished play and a photograph of the Judge were added to the collection by Joe Voorhies, Felix Voorhies' son, at his 100th birthday party in 1983.

Correspondence, papers and manuscripts of Dr. Lauren C. Post (born, 6 Sept. 1899; died, 21 Jan. 1976), a native of Acadia Parish, author, and professor of Geography for many years at San Diego State University. His papers include a diary, correspondence, and papers on a wide range of subjects including Attakapas Indians, brand records from St. Martinville, Acadian music, Huey Long, the 1915 hurricane, weaving and clothing.
Post's Cajun Sketches won the Louisiana Library Association's literary award in 1962. He also authored articles on South Louisiana in various journals.
Copied through the generosity of Lyle Johnson, Director of the Acadia Parish Library System.

The League of Women Voters of Lafayette was organized in 1945. The main objective of the League is to work for a better city and parish government, better schools, and the participation of all citizens in the democratic system. This collection contains incomplete internal records of the Lafayette League from its founding. There are also items which show the connectional relationship among local, state and national leagues. The subject series reflects the range of issues addressed by the League and shows the sort of information gathered to study these concerns. Kay Bates, a charter member of the Lafayette organization, initially donated this collection. Other members have made additional donations.

Sas-Jaworsky, Alexander (1916-1989). Papers, 1939-1984

Dr. Alexander Sas-Jaworsky was born on June 11, 1916, in Ukraine. He attended the Academy of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Lwiw (Lemburg). In June 1939 he began his veterinary practice. During World War II he lived under first Soviet and then Nazi control. The end of the war found Sas in Austria. He met his wife, Natalie Kulchycky, in a Bavarian displaced person camp. On September 19, 1949, Dr. Sas and his wife immigrated to the United States. By 1951 they had settled in Abbeville, where they established a veterinary practice and raised their five children. Dr. Sas is best known for his outspoken political views as a staunch anti-communist. He has made a career of spreading that viewpoint in frequent speeches, numerous published opinion-editorial essays, a newspaper column and in two books. He died on the morning of April 7, 1989.
This collection reflects Dr. Sas' political activism and his dedication to his chosen cause. It also indicates his continuing and underlying concern in Ukrainian nationalism.
The collection was donated by Dr. Sas-Jaworsky and his family.

This collection contains stereopticon slides and glass plates produced by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pa. These views are of scenes from all over the world. They were produced for educational purposes and discovered in a Gretna, Louisiana, elementary school. There is one study booklet on Mexico which accompanies a section of the slides. One contains scenes from stories of Peter Rabbit, and the second contains miscellaneous items including several images related to the Civil War.
The donor also included a stereopticon viewer.

Marie del Norte Theriot taught French at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). This collection contains information concerning people, places, and events during and before her life; information on different sections of Louisiana; and information on historical events. It includes postcards, notes, memos, awards presented to her, songs, biographical information on people of the U.S., photographs, and her personal souvenirs. Marie del Norte Theriot donated the collection, which is part of the Women in Louisiana Collection.

Membership rolls, minutes of the congregation meetings, the board of trustees (1877-1946), and session (1875-1975) of this church. The church evolved from the Vermilionville Presbyterian Church to the Lafayette Presbyterian Church and finally to the Lafayette First Presbyterian Church.
After being microfilmed by Dennis Gibson in 1975 the original records were sent to the Historical Foundation of Presbyterian and Reformed Churches, Montreat, N. C.

Triay, Frank Charles (1866-1947). Scrapbook, 1877-1946 [1900-1932]

Frank Charles Triay was a resident of Lafayette who was an active worker in the Socialist Party (US) and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. The scrapbook reflects those interests. It contains newspaper clippings on socialism; politics; political cartoons; and scattered topics including the Triay family, the labor union, parapsychology, and World War II. Triay collected political campaign items for the Socialist Party (US) and the LaFollett Progressive Party (1924). Clippings about Eugene V. Debs and letters from Debs and his brother, Theodore, are in the scrapbook. There are photographs, certificates, tickets and the charter for the Socialist Party Club of Lafayette, Louisiana (1904). There are poems, prayers, and radio dialogue which are either humorous or satirical.
The scrapbook is donated by Mr. & Mrs. E. B. McDaniel through Coleen McDaniel.

Foster was a native of New York who spent most of his life in the Upper Midwest, specifically Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois. His memoirs discuss his work as a railroad surveyor and in other occupations but focus mainly on his service in Wisconsin regiments during the Civil War. Some of that service was in Louisiana. Foster's memoirs were dedicated to his son, Clark Harold Foster, in 1900. There are 79 typed pages. Mrs. Arthur V. D. Clarkson loaned the memoirs to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin for microfilming. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette copy was made by Dennis Gibson for the Microfilm Division, University Libraries, 197-.

This collection contains lists of students who attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart, 1825-1955 and the College of the Sacred Heart, 1917-1943. These registers were used by Anna Jane Marks to prepare Register of Students of the Academy of the Sacred Heart Grand Coteau, La .,1821-1971 (Lafayette, La.: The Acadiana Press, 1981). The registers contain more information on each student than does the Marks book. The original registers were retained by the Academy of the Sacred Heart.

There are quarterly records of the Vermilion Circuit (1910-1913) and collected information on ministers who served the circuit. There are also two brief histories of the Abbeville Methodist Church and correspondence related to gathering information for another publication.

Material gathered about the visitation of Blessed John Berchmans to Mary Wilson at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau, La., in 1866. The collection contains printed material including biographies of St. John Berchmans when he was canonized, the catechism used by Novitiate Mary Wilson, and pamphlets. There are also handwritten transcripts (in both English and French) of diary entries, depositions, testimonials, and letters. There are also some original letters.
This material was microfilmed by Dennis Gibson for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1974. The originals are owned by the Academy of the Sacred Heart at Grand Coteau.

George Arceneaux, Sr. was a well-known expert in sugar cane technology. For many years he worked for the United States Department of Agriculture. The collection reflects Arceneaux's involvement with sugarcane, especially as a consultant for the Gulf and Western operation at Central Romania, Dominican Republic. Much of the correspondence and research material is connected with the breeding and selection work carried on there. There is also some material showing Arceneaux's continuing interest in his Acadian heritage. Mrs. George Arceneaux, Sr. and Judge and Mrs. George Arceneaux, Jr. donated this collection.

William Grout grew up around Walker, La. From his days in the Army Air Corps during World War II he has been an avid photographer. Although he has done commercial work in portraiture and weddings, this collection reflects his interest in scenic photography. Most of the images, which were taken mainly between 1974 and 1978, are of Louisiana, especially in the Florida parishes. They also indicate Mr. Grout's interest in motorcycling.
It was donated to the University by the photographer in 1978.

Robert F. Broussard and Edwin S. Broussard were brothers from rural Iberia Parish who served in the U. S. Senate, 1915-1918 and 1921-1933, respectively. Robert also served in the U. S. House of Representatives, 1897-1915. The family lived on a plantation near Loreauville, La. This collection was donated by Mrs. George and Dorville Broussard.

This collection contains his genealogy research correspondence, family files, articles, research material, census, work files, original documents, microfilms, microfiche, and other miscellaneous items. Neitzel, Robert S. (1911-1980). Collection, 1954-1983, n.d.

Robert Stuart Neitzel, born in Falls City, Neb., contributed to archaeology in the Lower Mississippi Valley and the southeastern United States for 30 productive years. He made major contributions to archaeological work in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia. He is best known for his work with Indian sites, especially those connected with Marksville culture, and the Tunica and Natchez tribes.
The collection dates almost entirely from the 1970s. One major exception is a series of photocopied correspondence from the 1950s involving the Prehistoric Indian Museum Neitzel founded and directed in Marksville. The collection contains maps, notes, correspondence, work papers, and newsletters; publications and writings, both draft and published material.
This collection was donated by Mrs. Robert S. Neitzel and the children, Sarah and Stuart.

Billeaud Sugar Mill. Collection, 1946-1981, n.d.

The Billeaud Sugar Mill was built in Broussard, Louisiana by Martial Billeaud in 1872. The factory produced about four hundred tons of sugar cane daily. Billeaud sold the business to his children in 1914, which then became Billeaud Sugar Factory, Inc. With the help of the sugar boom in southwest Louisiana, the factory was very successful. This collection consists of the sugar mill office files, which include ledger books, daily reports, financial reports, land abstracts, publications, correspondence, minutes of meetings, general records, and much more. Pat St. Julien donated this collection.

Jefferson Hennessy served as a member of the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) Health and Physical Education Department from 1959 until 1985. During that time, he coached the USL gymnastics and trampoline teams. This collection reflects Hennessy's coaching career and his efforts to promote the sport of trampoline. This collection is the result of a project sponsored by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and funded by The Louisiana Council in Human Relations and the Acadiana Committee for the Humanities. The project directors were Dr. Patricia Rickels and Matthew Schott with assistance from Barry Ancelet, Elemore Morgan, Jr., and Doris White. The collection contains taped interviews with several participants in Louisiana's civil rights movement. The final product of the project, a slide-tape presentation, "No Gains Without Pains: An Oral History of the Civil Rights Movement in Louisiana," is also included. Carlton James, a long-time Lafayette educator, and civil rights leader, is one of the people interviewed.
The collection was donated to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette by the Project Directors in 1984. Tapes are recorded on one side only.

The Lafayette Rotary Club was founded with twenty charter members in August 1920. It was the first men's service club in the city. Through the years the club has been active in improving the local community with special concern for youth work. Rotarians have actively participated in the city recreation program for youth and have been leaders of the Boy Scout movement. One of the unique contributions of the club was the Rotary Boys' Band which existed from 1922 to 1939 under the direction of Frank A. Baranco. The club has also been involved with civic improvement projects such as the Lafayette Public Library and the Municipal Auditorium. The records reflect the civic involvement of the club as well as its organizational structure.

Gaines: A Gathering of Gaines: The Man and The Writer (Lafayette, 1991). The collection also includes her other writings, correspondence, programs from concerts and recitals she accompanied for, and program notes and reviews she wrote for the Acadiana Symphony, Chorale Acadienne, and local music performances.Thetis Cusimano, Ms. Simpson’s daughter, donated the bulk of the collection.

When the Charter was completed, the Lafayette Board of Trustees adopted the Home Rule Charter, which would be governed by elected officials. This collection contains six separate series of the Lafayette City official government records under these charters. J. Rayburn Bertrand was the fifteenth mayor of Lafayette, serving from 1960 to 1972. He led Lafayette through a period of unprecedented growth and the turbulent civil rights era. This collection contains five volumes of scrapbooks while he was mayor of Lafayette, each having been microfilmed. Also included is a Bertrand family genealogy scrapbook that was compiled by Velia Bertrand Jr. who is a distant cousin of Bertrand. Henrietta Bertrand Boriskie donated the collection.

Henry C. Dethloff was on the faculty at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) from 1965 to 1968. He was in the History Department and was the director of the Southwestern Archives and Manuscripts Collection (now the University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection). Dethloff's major academic interest was agricultural history, especially rice growing and milling. His publication, A History of the American Rice Industry, 1685-1985, is the definitive monograph on this subject. This collection contains mainly research material and writings on the rice industry.

Sylvia Roberts was a lawyer, educator, and women’s rights activist. She was a member of the National Organization for Women and was victorious in the Weeks v. Southern Bell case for fighting gender-based discrimination. This collection contains Ms. Roberts’s working files various topics important to women’s rights advocates. These include abortion, the Equal Rights Amendment, maternity benefits, and women’s education.

Dr. Mary E. Dichmann was the Department Head of English at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) from 1956 to 1974. She then served as Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Behavioral Sciences from 1974 until her retirement in 1983. This collection consists of her personal and professional papers, as well as some records of organizations in which she was active, such as AAUW and Phi Beta Kappa.

Armand Brinkhaus was a Democratic former member of both the Louisiana House of Representatives (1968-1976) and the Louisiana State Senate (1976-1996). He is particularly known for his promotion of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL). Brinkhaus created the Dr. Armand L. and Julia Thoms Brinkhaus Fund to benefit the Dupré Library at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This collection consists of his working papers while in office. It also includes information on clubs and organizations that he was active in.

Jules O. Daigle was born in Lafayette. He made his studies for the priesthood at St. Joseph Seminary in St. Benedict, La., St. Mary’s in Baltimore, Maryland, and the North American College in Rome, where he was ordained in 1925. After retirement, he launched a writing career and wrote several books on the Cajun heritage, receiving international recognition for his work. This collection contains correspondence.

This collection consists of diaries, correspondence, financial records, ledgers, letterpress books, microfilm, notebooks, and other miscellaneous materials.

Family and Friends for the Mentally Ill (FFAMI) was one of the first mental health support groups in Louisiana. This collection contains working files of FFAMI arranged alphabetically and scrapbooks for the organization. Maizie Thibeaux, founder and director of the Family and Friends for the Mentally Ill, donated the collection.

He also played a significant role in the development of maritime law as it applies to the offshore oil and gas industry. This collection consists of federal cases mainly from Louisiana. Many of the cases deal with school desegregation. There are also cases from other states as well. Also included are correspondence, reports, publications, clippings, and court orders.

On 20 July 1968, Governor John J. McKeithen signed into law Act No. 409, authorizing the establishment of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL). It was developed to do all things necessary to accomplish the development, utilization, and preservation of the French language for the cultural, economic and tourist benefit of the state of Louisiana. This collection consists of mostly CODOFIL office records, including correspondence, meeting agendas, photographs, press releases, news clippings, and reports. There are scrapbooks that contain photographs and newspaper clippings from 1966 through 2001. These are also photographs of the 25th anniversary of CODOFIL and scholarship applications from 1990-2005.

This collection consists of copybook of Hebert and tapes from programs that he did. This collection was donated by W. Roy Hebert.

Dailey J. Berard founded Universal Fabricators, Inc. in 1980 based on his own inventions. UNIFAB is an industry leader in the custom fabrication of topside facilities, decks, jackets, equipment modules and other structures used in the development and production of oil and gas reserves. This collection contains mainly correspondence by Berard including many of his letters-to-the-editor printed in local papers. Also included are newspaper clipping, magazines articles about Berard and UNIFAB, and letters to Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Frances Love donated the collection.

Eugene Nicolas (1832-1891) and Jean Louis Desire Lorrain (1835-1892) were brothers, who were born in France and immigrated to Louisiana as young men in 1854. Both men bought land, first in Vermilion Parish and later farther west in what became Jefferson Davis Parish. This collection consists of correspondence, personal papers, business records, land records and tax bills and receipts (including one from the Confederacy), and succession records for members of the Lorrain family.

This collection consists of two ledgers from the Cahanin Store in Opelousas. Volume 1, dated 1838-1840, contains 480 pages. The second ledger is dated December 1847 to 1850 and contains 549 pages. This manuscript kept the sales record of a general store, with many thousands of named accounts and what they bought. There are over 10,000 entries for such products as whiskey, tobacco, quinine, wines, clothing, fabrics, and much more. Volume 1 was donated by Linnie C. Herpin. Volume 2 was purchased from Charles Apfelbaum Rare Manuscripts & Archives.

Mrs. Dessens loaned the scrapbooks to the University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection with permission to microfilm for the collection.

During his career, he served first as an editor for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He later taught history at Southern State College in Magnolia, AR and the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) (1958-1991). From 1973-1993, Conrad served as the director of the Center of Louisiana Studies at the University. This collection spans from 1767 to 2003, with the bulk of the material between 1970 and 2000. The collection includes Conrad’s professional correspondence (1971-1993), travel vouchers, awards, essays, research notes, manuscripts, biographical sketches, student evaluations, conference material, and collection of books, journal articles, and newspapers.

The Friends of the Humanities was established in 1989 as a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the role of the interdisciplinary humanities at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and in Acadiana. This organization generously provides various means of support to the College of Liberal Arts and strengthens the resources of the University’s Humanities program. This collection consists of the organization’s working files such as correspondence, minutes of meetings, and materials on tours and trips. Presidents Helen Billeaud, Sylvia Bienvenu, Judith Kennedy, and Linda Alesi donated have donated portions of this collection. The working files are arranged chronologically.

While at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Dur extensively researched and wrote about the life of Ambassador Jefferson Caffery (1886-1975). Much of this collection stems from the research conducted by Dur in preparation for his publications and includes both originals and copies of material, primarily correspondence, and photographs, created throughout Ambassador Caffery’s career. Margaret McMillan was an advisor at the Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) from 1941 to 1959 and served as the Coordinator of the University of Southwestern Louisiana women's Physical Education Department from 1972 to 1976. She then foundedMcMillan Offshore Survival Technology (MOST), served as a consultant in offshore safety and survival for branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, the British Royal Navy, and the Russian government. This collection contains photographs, correspondence, news clippings, miscellaneous materials, and books. The majority of the news clippings have been copied due to water damage. The books relate to health/fitness, travel, and offshore safety. There are also a number of McMillan’s personal yearbooks from her undergraduate and graduate years.

The L’Heure de Musique Records Club of Lafayette was organized in 1949. This club is a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs. The scope of this organization is the furtherance of musical interests in Lafayette and the earnest study of music in all its phases, for the mutual benefit of its members. This collection consists of scrapbooks ranging from 1949 to 1995 which include clippings, correspondence, photographs, certificates, flyers, annual programs, etc. There is also a minute book which contains the handwritten minutes of meetings from 1955-1957.

Riverside Irrigation Company. Records, 1896-1991.

The Riverside Irrigation Company was founded on 22 March 1895, in Jennings, La., by Edward F. Rowson, Orin S. Dolby, and S. J. Johnson. Dolby soon sold out to C. A. McCoy who served as the company’s president for many years. The company purchased land along Bayou Nepique containing a sawmill and quickly added a rice mill and warehouse. Canals were soon dug. Fourteen landowners signed on with the company in 1895. Lowell Stagg, a Southwestern Louisiana Institute graduate, served as Secretary, Treasurer, and General Manager from 1945 to 1978. In the 1990s, it stopped operating the canals and turned into a land management operation. This collection contains business records from 1895 to 1991. Many administrative records including minute books and correspondence are in the McNeese State University Archives Collection 33. This collection was donated by Joseph W. Freeland.

Margaret Stephens Jochem was born to Edwin Lewis and Beverly Randolph Stephens on August 26, 1912, in Lafayette, LA. Her father served as the first President of the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The Margaret Stephens Jochem Papers reflect the life of the first President’s daughter. The collection includes photographs, newspaper articles, and works of the Stephens’, such as numerous writings of President Stephens and Mrs. Jochem’s thesis on SLI and her “Life Story of Edwin Lewis Stephens”. The collection also includes President Stephens’s alphabetized personal correspondence during his last year in office. Finally, the collection documents the Live Oak Society through newspaper articles and Live Oak Society papers. Molly Jochem, the granddaughter of Margaret Stephens Jochem, donated the collection.

This collection consists of information on nurseries and assorted flowers, fruits, and vegetables, plants, etc. Also included is material on organizations of which she was a member.

In the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco created the Louisiana Recovery Authority (LRA), planning and coordinating body that led one of the most extensive rebuilding efforts in the world. Appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate, the organization’s 33-member body with secured funding for the recovery, coordinated across jurisdictions, supported community recovery and resurgence, ensured integrity and effectiveness, and planned for the rebuilding of Louisiana. This collection contains all the working files from the Louisiana Recovery Authority (LRA). Included are correspondence, publicity, committee material, reports, task force material, and other documents. John T. Landry donated the collection.

Offshore Oil and Gas History Project, 2001-2006

The Minerals Management Service (MMS), U.S. Department of the Interior, sponsored a study to examine the historical evolution of the offshore oil and gas industry and its effects on Louisiana’s coastal culture, economy, landscape, and society.
Between 2001 and 2006, over 450 interviews were recorded for the project. Each interview provides a unique look at the offshore oil and gas industry and its impacts on workers, their families and their communities. The interviews are on compact discs.

Ray P. Authement became president of the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1973. He served for 34 years, earning the distinction of being the longest-serving president of a public university in the United States. This collection contains newspaper clippings from his working files, personal correspondence, programs, videotapes, books and artifacts from his various endeavors throughout the community.

Helen Vaughan Burdin Baker Simpson was a professor of History and Humanities and the Head of the Department of History and Geography at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. These include materials from her history, humanities, and philosophy classes, student work, evaluations, and office files. The office files contain materials related to publishing, conferences, and organizations for which she was a member.

Michot was a businessman, philanthropist, and politician. His business enterprises included the Burger Chef restaurant chain, transportation, oil drilling, insurance, banking, and international trade. He served as a Democrat in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1960 to 1964 and was elected to the Louisiana State Board of Education from 1968-1972. He was then elected State Superintendent of Education and served from 1972-1976. During his term, he championed vocational-technical education and brought educational television to the state. This collection consists of Michot’s working and personal, photographs, and several oversize certificates.

Milton and Patricia Rickels taught English at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette from the 1950s until retirement. They were active scholars and published numerous books and articles. The couple received the Louisiana Humanist of the Year Award from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities in 1990. They were also active in the civil rights movement. This collection contains the genealogical research of amateur genealogist Clement Bourgeois, Jr. a native of Erath, Vermilion Parish. Bourgeois was a veteran of World War II, the postmaster of Erath (1953-1977), a photographer, and an amateur radio operator under the call sign N5ADK. Bourgeois’s primary focus in his research, was tracing his Bourgeois ancestors’ lineage back to France. However, he also aided family members and friends in their genealogical research.

Original manuscripts; correspondence; over twenty albums of photographs and handwritten documents dating from the nineteenth century; autobiographical and biographical materials; works on paper; illustrations, drawings and paintings by Ruth Jones Rabel, along with artifacts, are forthcoming. An endowment with UL Lafayette Foundation has been created in her name to house the collection for the preservation, research, cataloguing, writing, development, publication, and advancement of the works of Ruth Jones Rabel, the Ruth Jones Rabel Collection bequeathed by Linda Anne Rabel, daughter and only child of Ruth and Joseph Rabel.

This collection contains plays, articles, and books authored by Dr. Nolan. There is also some personal material, including correspondence and playbills. Jean Gentil was born in France which he left in 1851 as a political exile. He arrived in St. James Parish, Louisiana in 1853. He taught foreign languages at Jefferson College in Convent, LA. In 1865 he and A.V. Roman started the newspaper La Louisianais. He edited the paper 1865-1873, 1874-1881. Almost everything in the collection is a photocopy of either publications or documents from the Kurtz Collection at the Louisiana Research Library, Tulane University. There is also a framed portrait of M. Gentil. Mrs. William Butcher of Lafayette donated gathered the material and donated it to UAAMC.

This collection is divided into two series; the Murphy J. Foster Family Collection and the Routh T. Wilby Research Materials. The Foster Family Collection contains correspondence, bills, photographs, ephemera, publications, and artifacts from the Murphy J. Foster (January 12, 1849- June 12, 1921) and Rose Ker Foster (November 17, 1861- February 14, 1959) family of Franklin, Louisiana. The second half of the collection, the Routh Trowbridge Wilby Research Materials, contains Wilby’s research, correspondence, news clippings, drafts of her articles and books, photographs, and publications.

Renaissance Cadienne was a performance group established in 1990 for the purpose of preserving the unique culture of the Cajuns of the prairies and bayous of South Louisiana. The group used authentic Cajun/French folk songs and dances in its performances. The collection documents the activities of the group. The collection was donated by May Waggoner.

Landry, Edmond G. (1891-1932) and Norbert T. (1895-1924). Papers, 1907-1932, 2013

Edmond and Norbert Landry were 2 of the 5 children of Terville and Lucie Landry. The family lived in Segura and then New Iberia, LA. After military service in World War I, both brothers developed leprosy [Hansen’s disease]. Norbert moved to the Louisiana Leper Home in Carville, LA in 1919, where he died in 1924. Edmond went to Carville in 1924, surviving until 1932. This collection mainly contains letters written by Edmond and Norbert. It was donated by Claire Manes and Paul Landry on behalf of the Landry family.

The ledger contains accounts for Bellevue Plantation, c. 1860-1895. The plantation was located in the Youngsville area of Lafayette Parish. Martha Morse Cade was the widow of Robert Cade. There is also a contract between Mrs. Cade and freedmen (1870); a 1930 land sale by William Cade, and a scan of a photo of Bellevue Plantation.

Robert Martin was an attorney, politician, and businessman. As State Senator in 1898, he authored legislation establishing Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This collection contains notary volumes for Simeon Valery Martin, Louis E. Labaire, Robert Martin, and James J. Martin, all from St. Martin Parish. There are also copy books of business letters written by Robert Martin as both a lawyer and as a businessman.

This collection consists of the Rose-Hayes families of Petite Anse Island and allied families research papers. Elizabeth Hayes settled on Avery Island in the early 1790s. This scrapbook has been digitized, so a user’s copy is available on CD. Also included is “A Brief Autobiography” by Poret, Army Service material, and other writings.

The D.P. & C. Fire Company No. 1, known as Delhomme Patin and Chaisson, was organized on July 9, 1914. The Citizens of the Village of Scott met on that day at the Felix Foreman Hall to organize a fire company. They held meetings to form the company, appointed officers and created the Constitution and Bylaws of the D.P. & C. Fire Company No.1. This collection consists of minutes of meetings from July 9, 1914-July 27, 1916. Hope Jefcoat and Annadine Credeur, both of Scott, LA., digitized this minute book. They donated a digital copy to the University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection.

The Bayou Teche Project was conducted by the Department of Architecture at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) during the Fall 1985 semester. Edward J. Cazayou, Head of the Architecture Department, and Professor Russel Dupuis worked with fourth and fifth-year architecture students to study the soil, vegetation, fish and wildlife, climate, and history of the bayou. The group also looked at the bayou’s historical role as a transportation route. This collection consists of material related to the project. There are materials from students and faculty, government reports, and historical information such as maps, news clippings, and brochures.

Joseph Jefferson, also known as Joe Jefferson, was a popular 19th-century American actor. His most famous role was Rip Van Winkle, which he debuted in 1859 and continued to play for forty years. After the Civil War, he bought Orange Island near New Iberia, La., which he renamed Jefferson Island and where he built his home.

Edmond J. Tate was born on April 25, 1917, to Pierre Tate and Elia Foret Tate. Marie Vernice Savoie was born on July 21, 1919, to Alexandre Savoie and Angele Lavergne Savoie. Tate and Savoie married on July 8, 1941, in St. Landry Parish. Tate was a retired state employee, a veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. The couple resided in Evangeline Parish in the community of St. Landry. Tate passed away on February 6, 1990, while Savoie passed away on February 21, 1991. Both are buried in the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church Cemetery in the community of St. Landry. This collection consists of certificates of baptism and marriage license, records of the War Department, receipts, photographs, and other materials. Gabriel Rousseau de Villejoin was one of seven military captains who first arrived at Louisbourg in Nova Scotia. He was married to Marie Joseph Bertrand and they had five children together before he died in 1718. De Villejoin also served on the Superior Council at Port Toulouse in 1717. The collection is a family history of Gabriel Rousseau de Villejoin’s family. It includes information on de Villejoin, his family, their careers, and information on their lots in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. Also included is an extensive ancestry of Gabriel Rosuseau de Villejoin. Dr. Gerald Hubbell and his wife Geraldine Cormier Hubble had been patrons of Acadiana arts and music since the early 1970s and founded or co-founded several groups, including Chorale Acadienne and Acadiana Symphony Orchestra’s Conservatory of Music and Youth Orchestra. Dr. Hubbell served as sound archivist for live performances by the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, Chorale Acadienne, and the Vermilion Chamber Orchestra. This collection contains mostly choral and instrumental music performed by local, regional, and university ensembles and recorded by Dr. Hubble primarily on open reel tape between 1977 and 1997, with some recordings preserved on Digital Audio Tape (DAT) from about 1994 to 2000. Gerald Hubbell donated this collection.

Vernon Behrhorst, a geographer, was very active in the development of Louisiana water resources. In addition to being an Assistant Professor of Geography at University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), he was also a leader in many water resource associations. These associations include the Louisiana Intracoastal Seaway Association (LISA), the Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association (GICA), the governor's Office of Water Policy in Louisiana, and theNational Ports and Waterways Institute at Louisiana State University. This collection contains Behrhorst’s papers related to the organizations, associations, and conferences for which he was involved. These papers include project proposals, correspondence, reports, memorandums, and materials from conferences. There are also photographs and audiovisual materials on reels and VHS. These papers were transferred from Tulane University’s Louisiana Research Collection to Dupré Library’s University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection by Leon Miller in 2016.

Dr. Barry Jean Ancelet served on the faculty of University of Southwestern Louisiana/University of Louisiana at Lafayette from 1977 until his retirement in 2016. He was a professor in the Department of Modern Languages, serving as chair of the department and as the first director of the University’s Center for Acadian and Creole Folklore, the largest compilation of media resources pertaining to these two south Louisiana ethnic groups. He was also the co-founder of the Tribute to Cajun Music in 1974, which became the annual Festivals Acadiens. This collection consists of manuscripts from “Suite de loupe” (1998) and “The Makers of Cajun Music” (1984). Dr. Ancelet donated the collection.

His diary contains illustrative accounts of the battles and the extreme conditions he and other soldiers endured. Retiring in 2018 after 47 years of work, he was one of the longest-serving employees of Dupré Library. This collection contains historical items that Mr. Bethard collected over the years. Dr. Ian Bruce Turner was the University Archivist and the Assistant Dean of Special Collections Services at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. During his 33 years at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, he rose to the rank of Professor, published over 26 articles in six different journals, curated 30 exhibits, wrote multiple grants, and participated in numerous committees. From 1998-2001, he was the recipient of the Friends of the Edith Garland Dupré Library Board of Regents Support Fund Professorship. He was an active member of the Louisiana Archives and Manuscripts Association (LAMA) and the Society of Southwest Archivists (SSA), serving over the years as president, present-elect, vice president, and boar and committee member for both organizations. This collection consists of his working files as the University Archivist. There are correspondence files, files on all committees he worked on, state and national conference material he was officers for, writings, awards, etc. The collection was donated by Sue S. Turner, wife of Dr. Turner.

Pothier Jean Voorhies was a businessman and civic leader, his principal business activity being the Lafayette Lumber Company. He served as President and General Manager from 1914 until his death. This collection consists of Voorhies’s business records, personal papers, and correspondence (incoming and outgoing) with former employees serving in the military during World War II. This collection was donated by the Lafayette Public Trust Financing Authority, which renovated the Lafayette Lumber Company building for housing in 2017/18.

Lionel "Chick" Vidrine operated the the Southern Club, one of the premier venues for swamp pop music and musicians, from 1956 to 1994. The dance hall/nightclub hosted notable swamp pop musicians and bands from the 1950s through the 1980s, as well as other famous R&B and country musicians and bands. After closing in 1996, the building was listed on the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation as an endangered historic site. This collection consists of band contracts between the club and band, financial records, correspondence, flyers, and much more.

Ernest Lee Crochet was a native and lifelong resident of Loreauville, Louisiana. His parents were Dosilva and Annette Broussard Crochet. He joined the U.S. Army and served in WWII and the Korean War. After his release from the military, he worked for many years as a surveyor for C.H. Fenstermaker. He died at the age of 90. He is buried at St. Joseph Cemetery, Loreauville, Louisiana. This collection consists of a diary he kept while serving in the military and a Signal Manual photocopy.

The collection includes materials pertaining to Dr. Meriwether’s study of nuclear physics, environmental science, and the Microspace: Science and Hidden Art collaborative exhibit. Also included are copies of Dr. Meriwether’s research, lantern slides and X-rays, class tour photographs, and correspondence regarding speaking bureaus and race relations. The bulk of the materials in this collection were created and gathered for the Culture of Man honors course, taught by Dr. Meriwether, between 1980 and 2009. This collection was donated in 2012.

Early in the morning on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States. Hurricane Rita was the seventeenth named storm, tenth hurricane, and the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season. In Louisiana, Rita's storm surge inundated low-lying communities along the entire coast, worsening effects caused by Hurricane Katrina less than a month prior, such as topping the hurriedly-repaired Katrina-damaged levees at New Orleans. This collection consists of newspaper and magazine articles, travel guides, maps, and a Scrapbook titled “A Season to Remember—Katrina and Rita.” James Peterson of Broussard, Louisiana, and Sam Childers of Dallas, Texas donated the materials in this collection.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men. This group planted nearly 3 billion trees to help reforest America, constructed trails, lodges, and related facilities in more than 800 parks nationwide, upgraded most state parks, updated forest fire fighting methods, and built a network of service buildings and public roadways in remote areas. Judith Leger donated the photographs from 1933; her father was a member of the group (is pictured in the August 1933 photograph). Dee Tauzin donated the photograph from 1934; her uncle, Alcee Jefferson Pothier, Jr., was a member and is pictured.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was inducted August 3, 1943, where he served as a Staff Sergeant in General Omar N. Bradley’s company. This collection consists of three scrapbooks with photographs taken and collected by Staff Sergeant Barousse during World War II. There are also two certificates and a photograph of him. Lucien J. Savoie, III and Christine Savoie, Staff Sergeant Barousse’s nephew and grandniece respectively, donated the digital version of this collection.

Wilfred Savoie Jr. was born and raised in Cankton, Louisiana, a village in St. Landry Parish. He served in the United States Navy from October 25, 1943, to May 17, 1946. This collection consists of letters he sent home to his family while stationed in California. The majority of the letters are to his mother (Mamma), where he talks about his day-to-day life at the Navy base and inquires about life back at home on the family farm. Also included in the collection are miscellaneous items such as a photocopy of his honorable discharge, his health record during his time in the Navy, and photographs of him and his brother Alexander. This collection was donated by his daughters, Joy S. Usie and Shelly Thompson.

Francis DuBose Richardson owned the Bayside Plantation on the Bayou Teche in Jeanerette, Louisiana. This collection consists of papers presenting the history of the Richardson, Bissell, and Horner families. These include genealogy, writings, photographs, and original letters between family members. There is also a record book dated from 1860-1868 of day-to-day operations on the plantation side. According to the record book, crops planted included cotton and corn, but mainly sugarcane. Wesley Winans Horner II donated the papers. Gayle Breaux Smith donated the records book.

Jacqueline (Jacqui) Theresa Michot Ceballos was born in Mamou, Louisiana in 1925. After graduating from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), she moved to New York City to pursue a career in opera. She became involved with feminist activism in the late 1960s, acting as president of the New York chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and as the founder of the Veteran Feminists of America (VFA). This collection contains books collected by Ms. Ceballos with inscriptions written by her, the authors, and/or people who gifted her the books. Ms. Ceballos donated this collection with the help of her nephew Dr. Thomas Michot, her daughter Michèle Ceballos Michot, and her granddaughter Natalia Ronceria Ceballos.

Rodney Hamilton was a Korean War veteran who had been very active in veterans organizations, including the Marine Corps League Acadiana Detachment and the Veteran’s Action Coalition of Southwest Louisiana. Under his leadership, the coalition helped establish the Lafayette Community Based Outpatient Clinic, which offers primary care, physical therapy, and laboratory services for veterans. This collection contains materials related to Hamilton’s military and political careers. These include photographs, articles, programs, a scrapbook, and recognitions. Much of the collection also highlights his work with the Marine Corps League and Veteran’s Action Coalition of Southwest Louisiana. Rodney Hamilton donated the collection.

Celeste Mouton was the younger sister of Governor Alexandre Mouton. Her father, Jean Mouton père, donated land to her that was ultimately put under shared ownership with her husband, Joseph D. Guidry. Citing Sections 2390 & 2391 of the 1870 Louisiana Civil Code, she sued in the St. Landry Parish District Court to recover her paraphernal property for her to be the sole owner. This collection contains a scanned copy and a transcription of the case file. Leslie Elizabeth Barras, great-granddaughter of Celeste Mouton, scanned, transcribed, and donated the collection.

Secretary Shawn Wilson is the Secretary of Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD). An alumni of University of Louisiana at Lafayette, he also was instrumental in establishing the National Pan-Hellenic Council (Black Greeks) on campus and serving as the first African American SGA president and the president of the Alumni Association. This collection consists of one volume of digitized color photographs from the 50th Anniversary of Desegregation of the University in 2004 and a digitized color photograph album of National Pan-Hellenic Council events and social activities while Secretary Wilson was a student at the UL Lafayette from 1987-1993. Secretary Wilson loaned the collection for digitization and donated the digital copies.

Alton Edmond Broussard was a newsman and professor of journalism. He taught at University of Louisiana at Lafayette for 37 years, and published many independent newspapers, including the Lafayette Guide. This collection contains the writings of Alton Broussard. The first volume is the entire Lafayette Guide newspaper. The two scrapbooks contain his articles from other newspapers, such as the Daily Advertiser. Three of Alton Broussard’s children, Mary Perrin, Sam, and Alton “Skip” II, and his son-in-law, Warren Perrin, donated this collection.

Dr. John Fiero was a theater professor at University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette), specializing in English Renaissance literature, particularly Shakespeare, history of theater, and dramatic writing.This collection consists of scripts of plays written primarily by John Fiero, who also donated the collection. There are also two plays written by Dr. Paul Nolan, another professor from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The plays are all organized in alphabetical order.

This collection contains a portrait and land grant, both in frames. Azema Demarais, a Frenchwoman whose family settled in Louisiana during colonial days, is the subject of the portrait. Her great granddaughter Azema Demarais Rountree Smith, owned the portrait and land grant. Louis LoConte and his daughters, Paula Frazier and Amanda Michanczyk, donated these items. Dr. Manuel Morales of the UL Lafayette History Department and Dr. Leslie Bary of the UL Lafayette Modern Languages Department translated and transcribed the land grant from Spanish to English.

Col. Eugene Trahan of Lafayette, LA served in the 2nd Armored Division during World War II as a tank battalion commander. After the war, he served as Division Chief of Staff in Göppingen, Germany and as an executive officer of the National War College. This collection contains two scrapbooks put together by Col. Trahan, featuring his extended family and military career. Edward Mouton donated the collection by way of Dr. Vaughn Baker.

Pierre Otis “P.O.” Broussard was born in Abbeville, LA and lived in Lafayette, LA for his whole adult life. His family traces back to the pre-Civil War era. After serving in World War II, he worked for Amoco Production Co. for 39.5 years. He died August 6, 2002 in Lafayette. This collection contains materials pertaining to P.O. Broussard. Of particular interest are scrapbooks containing photographs he took or collected during World War II. Vaughan Baker, P.O. Broussard’s niece, donated the collection.

The Boudreaux Family Genealogical Records are family records compiled by Joan S. Boudreaux. Mrs. Boudreaux was born in Baton Rouge and was a lifelong resident of Acadiana. The Boudreaux’s were some of the original Acadians who settled in Acadie in Nova Scotia before being exiled, eventually settling in South Louisiana. This collection contains genealogical charts, copies from books, various records, and books Mrs. Broudreaux used to compile the family genealogy. The family has been traced back to the year 920 AD. Her daughter, Lisa B. Menard, donated this collection.

Opelousas is a city located in St. Landry Parish. Established in 1720, it is the third oldest city in Louisiana and prides itself as the Zydeco capital of the world. This collection contains oral histories from residents of Opelousas. Topics include life in Opelousas during the 1940s and 1950s, experiences as educators, the Civil Rights Movement, Cajun and Creole cultures, Zydeco music, and the Louisiana Orphan Train Riders. Melanie Lee-Lebouef of the City of Opelousas Tourism donated this collection.

Neil Martin and Frederick J. Nehrbass were architects based in southwest Louisiana. They both designed many different buildings in Lafayette, the southwest Louisiana region, and New Orleans. This collection contains working files and original architectural drawings from both architects. Also included are correspondence, lectures, publicities, brochures, and photographs. The grandchildren of Frederick Nehrbass—Kim Nehrbass, Heidi Nehrbass Alpha, Tanya Nehrbass Schulze, and Seth Nehrbass—donated the collection with assistance from UL Lafayette’s School of Architecture and Design.

Dr. Thomas “Tommy” C. Michot is a retired research scientist at the Institute for Coastal Ecology and Engineering at UL Lafayette. His research focused on ecology and management of coastal marshes, mangroves, and seagrass beds in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, and how wintering waterfowl and other birds use those habitats. This collection of papers includes files on Dr. Michot’s research on Red Head Ducks, field notes, data sheets, photographs and slides, computer punch cards, and audio cassettes. Thomas Michot donated this collection.

Jacob Valentine was a biologist based out of Lafayette Louisiana. He served as Gulf Coast Management Biologist for Refuges in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas from 1960 to 1981. Valentine has written papers on the cattle egret, marsh ecology, alligators, and the Mississippi Sandhill Crane. This collection contains Valentine’s professional files that chronicle his work while in Louisiana. These files include notes, papers, news clippings, and photographs. Dr. Thomas C. Michot, a colleague of Valentine’s, donated the collection.

Jeanette Plauché Parker is retired professor of education from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Her book Bendel Gardens: An Historic Treasure in Lafayette, Louisiana, presents an authentic history of the Bendel Gardens subdivision through family and church records, legal documents, personal interviews, and other primary sources. This collection contains Dr. Parker’s research notes on Bendel Gardens. Dr. Jeanette Plauché Parker donated the collection.

Evelyn Guilbeau of Carencro was a teacher in St. Martin Parish. She was a student of Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). This collection contains two scrapbooks that Ms. Guilbeau compiled during her time at SLII. The scrapbooks contain letters, clippings, written entries, stamps, and other miscellaneous items collected by Ms. Guilbeau. Separate from the scrapbooks, the collection also includes a speech she gave to high school students and a couple of photographs. Nancy Oliver (her granddaughter) and James Guilbeau (her nephew) donated the collection.

Abdalla’s, a popular clothing store chain, was established by Edward Abdalla III and his wife Irma Belle Abdalla in 1933. The store had presences in Lafayette, Opelousas, and New Iberia. This collection contains scrapbooks of advertisements for Abdalla’s department stores. These advertisements largely come from Lafayette newspapers. Bradley E. Black donated the collection.

Acadiana PRIDE was formed in 2014, where Louis Tolliver and Ted Richard acted as president and vice president respectively. The first festival ran for four days, with around 5,000 to 6,000 people in attendance. The festival continues to celebrate LGBTQ+ pride and recognize the contributions and acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals in Acadiana culture. This collection is an LGBTQ resource. Ted A. Richard donated the collection.

Club My-O-My was a drag bar on the West End of New Orleans. Opened in the 1930s, it was advertised as a “female impersonator” club, in which drag queens performed for both gay and straight audiences. This collection contains a few items from Club My-O-My. These includes programs, postcards, a matchbook, and vintage salt and pepper shakers. This collection is an LGBTQ resource.

The Thornton Grab and Derrick Works was founded by John Adelbert Thornton in 1898 in McDonoghville. The company built sugar cane storage derricks, with Thornton designing the equipment himself. This collection contains sugar industry materials from the Thornton Family Companies. These include endorsement letters regarding machinery invention, photographs, publications and machinery blueprints and sketches. Lyman E. “Butch” Thornton, former operator of the business, donated the collection.

Virgil Frozard was born on March 6, 1798 in Louisiana to Joseph and Marie née Barbe. In 1842 he built the Frozard Plantation House in Grand Coteau. It has also been known as the Olivier Plantation. Joseph Frozard was born on September 30, 1836 to Virgil and Eloise Frozard née Savoie. The collection contains family papers and invoices collected by Virgil and Joseph Frozard. A great number of these documents are in French. Yvonne Olivier and Louise V. Olivier, descendants of Agricole Olivier, donated this collection.

The first binder documents the work from parents and advocates of deaf children on behalf of educational interpreters. The second binder includes documents on levels of interpreter processing, and Recommendations for Continued Desegregation of Schools in Lafayette Parish through the Implementation of Schools of Choice by LPSS Superintendent James Easton. Gail Abshire created the binders and donated this collection.

The Ocean Drilling & Exploration Company (ODECO) was an offshore oil drilling company founded by Alden J. “Doc” Laborde and John Hayward in 1953. The company was headquartered in New Orleans, and they pioneered semi-submersible drilling rigs. Throughout much of the company’s existence, a monthly newsletter called ODECO Soundings was released to highlight the activities and accomplishments of ODECO. This collection contains issues of the newsletter from 1969 to 1991. Susan Couvillon and Doc Laborde’s family donated the collection through Jason Theriot.

(Concern for AIDS Relief Education and Support), AcadianaCares provides services and education to help care for individuals with HIV/AIDS and prevent the spread of the virus. This collection contains a scrapbook put together by Ted Richard, a volunteer at AcadianaCares who promoted education on HIV/AIDS. Ted Richard donated the collection.

Lafayette Parish, located in south Louisiana, was founded in 1823 and named after American Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette. This collection contains civil records from 1800 to 1865 preserved onto 35" microfilm. The earliest records were originally kept by a colonial district, U.S. territorial, or other Louisiana parish government entity.
