Did you know that in our rare book collection, we have a copy of The Domesday Book?

The Domesday Book is a survey conducted and compiled by King William I of all the counties in England in 1086.  According to the Nationial Archives in the UK “The word ‘Domesday’ does not appear in the book itself. A book written about the Exchequer in c.1176 (the Dialogus de Sacarrio) states that the book was called ‘Domesday’ as a metaphor for the day of judgement, because its decisions, like those of the last judgement, were unalterable.”

The book was donated to the university library, then U.S.L., in memory of Ruth A. Miller and Minos D. Miller Sr. by their grandchildren. A plaque with a photo of the Miller’s holding the Domesday Book is prominently displayed in the center.
