Here in Special Collections, we safeguard a wealth of rare books and artifacts that are desperately in need of preservation.

These delicate materials are vulnerable to the elements, which can exacerbate their existing damage. Our goal is to ensure that our users can continue to access and appreciate our Rare Book Collection. To achieve this, we create custom phase boxes to protect fragile and damaged book. These boxes provide a protective barrier against further deterioration, allowing future generations to enjoy these treasures.

Below is a breakdown of the steps involved in phase boxing. This process highlights how our archive’s approach differs from others, and it can even be adapted for use at home to protect your own treasured books!

  1. Find a Book – Pick a book that may look like it needs some help! It may appear as though its spine is flaking away, or in a condition that could lead to more damage when exposed to the elements due to advanced age.
  2. Measure Length – Measure the book's length twice, using 1/3 as the unit of measurement each time, including both ends. Trim the dimensions you've measured and fold the ends on both sides. After placing the cover on the book, snip the four corners at an angle, then apply a set of Velcro adhesive dots to join the two sides together.
  3. Measure Width – To determine the width of the book, you can employ the same technique as step 2, but this time, keep the previous cover intact on the book while taking measurements.
  4. Put Together – After finishing both covers, secure the bottom cover to the top using two Velcro adhesive dots, and then inscribe the book's title on the spine.

Your valuable books will now be well-protected and secure!
