Purpose

The purpose of the Circulation Department is to provide friendly and courteous service to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette community and the general public in lending library materials. Additionally, staff members are responsible for answering directional questions, maintaining photocopiers, the photocopier room change machine, and group study rooms.

Patrons

  • We serve everyone involved with the university in addition to the general public. The ULL faculty, staff and students are required to have a current and validated university ID to borrow materials.
  • Among those patrons who are not associated with the university, only those who wish to purchase a Friends of the Library card (at the annual cost of $35.00) may borrow library materials.
  • Alumni who possess an "alumni card" are also extended borrowing privileges.
  • Finally, the Louisiana Academic Library Information Consortium (LALINC), which consists of faculty, staff and graduate students from all state institutions in good standing are issued a LALINC card allowing them cooperative borrowing privileges. See attachment for library circulation regulations applying to LALINC users.

Allowances are made at the beginning of every semester or session for students who have not yet been able to secure a current validated ID. During this time, any form of pictured ID is acceptable. This period of "allowance" lasts for two weeks into each semester or session.

Loan Periods

Materials lent through the Circulation Department include: books, bound periodicals, compact disks (CDs), video cassettes, and DVDs. Books are loaned to faculty members for an academic year, to graduate students for one semester, and undergraduate students are allowed a twenty-one (21) day check-out period. Bound periodicals are loaned only to faculty, staff and graduate students–faculty and staff have a seven day loan period, while graduate students are limited to overnight checkout. Videos and compact disks are charged out to faculty and graduate students for a 3-day period, and to staff and undergraduates for 1 day only. Books and CD-ROMs have a loan period of twenty-one days. Renewals of library materials are allowed as long as there has been no request for that material by any other patron.

Other Services

  • The staff of the Circulation Services Department provides keys for several Group Study rooms located on the 1st and 2nd floors. These rooms are for use by groups of two or more students for study purposes. A two-hour time limit will be enforced as demand requires. A current validated University of Louisiana at Lafayette ID is required to use a study room. Fines for misuse include: $5.00 for leaving with a key; and $15 for replacement of a lost key.
  • Circulation Services also includes the stack area where library materials are shelved on each floor. These areas are maintained by 2 full-time employees and 1 part-time employee, plus assigned student assistants. Their responsibility includes the upkeep of these areas and to offer assistance as needed by patrons who ask for help.
  • Xerox copiers are maintained by Circulation staff and Xerox technicians; a change machine is located in the 1st floor Copy Center, exchanging quarters for paper bills, $1 –$20.
