Jack LaBauve Collection

Collection 336

LaBauve, Jack (1916-2006). Collection, 1976–2000, n.d.

12.5 feet

Jack LaBauve was born on October 11, 1916. He was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and lived in Lafayette, Louisiana most of his life. During World War II LaBauve served in the Pacific Theater as a member of the U.S. Army. He became a music professor at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1948 where he taught brass, percussion, and musical arranging. He also founded Big Hill Music Press in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. He used Big Hill Music Press to publish his own arrangements for band and orchestra, which are included in this collection. In 1950 he helped his sister, Hilma LaBauve Levis, to arrange a contest-winning song which became the University’s fight song, now known as the Ragin’ Cajun Fight Song. Jack LaBauve retired in 1977 and passed away in 2006.

This collection includes mostly concert scores (parts for instruments in band or orchestra) for pieces which were arranged, edited or transposed by LaBauve. Some selections include multiple versions of arrangements of the same musical piece. Most of the pieces also include separate parts for strings sections. Some of the pieces also include organ parts, brass ensemble parts, solo instrumental parts, or separate parts for each band or orchestra instrument. Most pieces include a first draft, intermediate draft, and final/published draft. The pieces arranged by Jack LaBauve were selected from well-known musical composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Debussy.

Hilma Levis donated the collection.
