Clement Bourgeois, Jr. Genealogical Records

Collection 308

Bourgeois, Clement, Jr. (1913–2006). Genealogical Records, 1600s–1999, n.d.

10 feet, .5 inches

This collection contains the genealogical research of amateur genealogist Clement Bourgeois, Jr., a native of Erath, Vermilion Parish. Bourgeois was a veteran of World War II, the postmaster of Erath (1953-1977), a photographer, and an amateur radio operator under the call sign N5ADK. Bourgeois’s primary focus in his research was tracing his Bourgeois ancestors’ lineage back to France. However, he also aided family members and friends in their genealogical research.

The Genealogical Indexes and Series A-D were previously organized and retain their original arrangement. The Genealogical Indexes are the product of Bourgeois’s many years of research. Each volume is arranged by family surname and includes a unique “tab” filing system which displays one family group on each page. Series E was created from two boxes of unsorted materials; these were collected and then sorted by type and year. This series contains correspondence and materials relating to Bourgeois’s non-genealogical interests and his career as a postmaster. The Genealogical Indexes and Series A-D include genealogy charts, news clippings, photographs, correspondence, and vital records.

Included in the collection are account books from an unidentified mercantile store in Erath (dates ranging from 1909 through 1927). One letter in the collection suggests this may have been Trahan and Viator’s General Merchandise Store where Clement Bourgeois Sr. worked as a young man. Also included are money order books from the Erath post office (dates ranging from 1911 through 1935) under Postmaster Clement Bourgeois Sr.

Carl James Doumit primarily donated the collection, with additional materials from Philip Nunez.
