Joseph A. Riehl Papers

Collection 15

Riehl, Joseph A. (1906–1989). Papers, 1910–1988, n.d.

4 feet, 2.5 inches

Joseph Anthony Riehl was a long time participant in the SLI/USL (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) community as a student, faculty member, and administrator. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1926 and a Master of Arts from Georgetown University. He served as secretary for Senator Joseph E. Ransdell and took courses at George Washington University while in Washington D.C. At SLI/USL Riehl taught history and served at various times as Registrar, Dean of Men, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dean of Administration, and Dean of the University.

These papers focus on various portions of Riehl's career in academia. There are several essays and collections of class notes from his graduate courses. Riehl oversaw the Navy Training Program at SLI during World War II. The papers contain a great deal of information on the activities of the V 5 and V 12 programs.

Most of these papers were donated shortly after Riehl's retirement in 1965. Later donations came from his son, Dr. Joseph E. Riehl.

For more material on Riehl's career at USL, see his tape and transcript in the USL Oral History Collection.
