Caffery, John M. (1877–1958). Papers, 1817–1960

John Murphy Caffery was born on Bethia Plantation near Franklin, Louisiana on 14 September 1877, was the son of Senator Donelson Caffery and Bethia Richardson. He attended private schools in Franklin, Louisiana, before enrolling at Hunt College in Port Gibson, Mississippi. He then enlisted in the United States Naval Academy (class of 1901) and served in the Navy until 1907. He married Mary Temperence Frere (1884-1958) on 26 October 1901. They had 5 children. Caffery died 31 January 1958 in Franklin and is buried in Franklin Cemetery.

Caffery was a politician and a businessman. He entered the oil business in Jennings, Louisiana after leaving the Navy. He returned to Franklin in 1910 and became manager of Columbia Sugar Company and later a vice president of the St. Mary Bank and Trust Company. He was a member of the State senate representing St. Mary and Vermilion parishes, 1928-1932. He also served on the St. Mary Parish Police Jury, the Democratic State Central Committee, and the board of commissioners of the Franklin Drainage District.

This collection consists of correspondence from his business years and also personal correspondence. Also included are financial records, leases, newspaper clippings, photographs of family, publications, documents of his son Clegg going through Infantry Training School, diaries of Caffery, journals, notebooks, and other miscellaneous materials.
