Theobald Joseph Labbe, Sr. was born on November 6 , 1867 in St. Martinville, Louisiana. He was the son of Marie Ameline Stephanie Duchamp De Chastaigné and Arthur Labbe from the Isle of Martinique. He was married and had 13 children, 33 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren at the time of his death. He died at the age of 81.

Mr. T.J. Labbe, Sr. was a druggist and was also interested in farming and politics. He served as mayor of St. Martinville for two terms, elected in 1896 and 1898. In 1900, he was elected to the State Senate and served for eight years. During his years as a state senator he supported the creation of Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). Always interested in education, he is credited with establishing the St. Martin Parish school system.
