Vesta Richard Bourgeois was born August 19, 1903 in Franklin, Louisiana, the daughter of Louis Richard and Kathryn Hansen Richard. She married James H. Bourgeois and had one son, James H., Jr. She received a two-year diploma in 1924 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in education in 1927, both from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). In 1934, she received a Masters of Education degree from George Peabody College. She taught physical education at SLI/University of Southwestern Louisiana from 1939 to 1968, serving the last eight years as Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Vesta R. Bourgeois died October 31, 2004, at the age of 101.

This collection consists of a few artifacts from her time at the University. Also included are photographs, publications, and a family bible.
