Morris Raphael was born in Natchez, Mississippi on July 31, 1917 and died in New Iberia, Louisiana on July 1, 2011 at the age of 93. He married Sereatha Lorenzo and they had two sons, Morris Jr. and Charles. After Sereatha’s death he married Helen Hofstetter. They had two children, Rose Anne and John.
Raphael was an award-winning journalist, novelist, local historian, newspaperman, engineer and artist. He worked professionally as an engineer for a variety of companies in south Louisiana and traveled to Brazil as part of his work. His interest in local history and culture led to fourteen published books, and numerous articles, presentations, tours and news columns throughout his lifetime. He researched extensively on the Civil War in Louisiana, Weeks Hall and Shadows-on-the-Teche, and regional areas in Acadiana. He was a prominent community figure and civic leader with memberships in local and national organizations.
Helen Raphael donated the collection.
This collection contains Morris Raphael’s correspondence, research materials, and writings, as well as personal material, photographs, and digitized audio-taped oral histories.
