Philip F. Dur Papers
Collection 288
Dur, Philip F. (1914–2005). Papers, 1913–2002, n.d.
10 feet, 8 inches
Philip Francis Dur (1914-2005) was born in St. Louis, Missouri on June 30, 1914 to Alphonse Nicolas and Sarah Ralston Dur. He attended Harvard from 1931-1941, ultimately obtaining his PhD in History/Government while gaining experience teaching at the university level. In 1942, he married Elena Delgado, with whom he had six children.
From 1942 to 1946, Dr. Dur served in the United States Naval Reserve, reaching the level of Lieutenant Commander. In 1947, he embarked on a career as a Foreign Service Officer. He traveled to France (1948-51), Germany (1951-1954), Panama (1954-1955), and Japan (1955-1958; 1961). In 1965, Dr. Dur joined the faculty at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) as the Jefferson Caffery Professor of Political Science. He died 5 October 2005, and was buried in Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, DC.
While at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Dr. Dur extensively researched and wrote about the life of Ambassador Jefferson Caffery (1886-1975). Much of this collection stems from the research conducted by Dr. Dur in preparation for his publications, including originals and copies of correspondence and photographs created throughout Ambassador Caffery’s career. For more information about Ambassador Jefferson Caffery, view the Jefferson Caffery Papers (Collection 45) and the Jefferson Caffery Photograph Albums (Collection 45A).
In addition to material related to Ambassador Caffery, this collection contains research materials related to journal articles and other publications written throughout Dr. Dur’s career. Topics include American education, Louisiana history, and French history.
Philip Dur Jr. and his siblings donated the collection along with Christopher Gilcrease.
