The Louisiana Irrigation and Mill Company was formed to construct a lock or locks and a dam on the Mermentau River, in the state of Louisiana.  This was approved on March 12, 1903. 

This collection consists of correspondence, telegrams, a fair amount of financial records, documents and other miscellaneous material.

2-37   Parish of Acadia, agreement between the undersigned with Rice Irrigation and Improvement Association that for a period of 90 years, each of the subscribers will pay each year on or before December 15.… dated April 4, 1903
2-38   Parish of Acadia.  Rice Irrigation & Improvement Association owes approximately 6,000 for labor, expense and insurance incurred during the year 1904.  It is estimated that the expense of maintaining the Mermentau Lock and Dam during the year 1905

The Eastern portion of the parish of Cameron has been placed as a result of the construction of the dam across the Mermentau River.  Since construction of this dam, thousands of acres in have been inundated by water held back by this dam

2-51   Calcasieu parish, W.A. Balle resides in Lake Author and operates different kinds of boats upon the Mermentau river and its tributary bayous and lakes.  Signed and sworn May 18, 1906
2-52   Parish of Acadia, Chaptain T.P. Pearson has been navigating in different kinds of vessels and boats for over forty years.  He has operated different kinds of boats on the Mermentau River, its bayous and lakes; and that he knows it to be a positive fact that the locks and dam at Grand Chenier is thoroughly familiar.  Signed and sworn May 24, 1906
