Paul Butterfield Freeland was born 15 September 1904 in Crowley, Louisiana. He graduated from Crowley High School in 1921, Davidson College in 1925, and Union Theological Seminary (Richmond, VA) in 1928. He was a pastor of Presbyterian churches in Opelousas and Covington, Louisiana and Duncan, Oklahoma. He served as secretary of Overseas Relief for Presbyterian Church, U.S. Freeland was also a genealogist and a historian. He was author of The First Presbyterian Church of Crowley, Louisiana 1890-1965 and co-author of Acadia Parish, Louisiana: A History to 1900 with Mary Alice Fontenot. He was on the board of Presbyterian Historical Foundation at Montreat, N.C. He died 1 November 1976, and was buried at Crowley Protestant Cemetery.
This collection contains a large number of photographs and printed material on the cultivation and manufacturing of rice. Many of the photographs show rice farming, irrigation, equipment, and milling in the Crowley, Louisiana region. Most of the photographs are copy prints. The Barnett Studio of Crowley took many of the photographs. There are also newspapers including the Golden Jubilee edition of the Crowley Signal, publications, pamphlets, and other printed material.
Note: Two Account ledgers of The American Rice Mill Company 1905-1909 and 1919-1922 have been removed from this collection and added to Collection 122, American Rice Milling Company Records.
