Matthew Ignatius Ramsey was born on April 23, 1886 in Abbeville, Louisiana. His parents were Laura Alice O’Bryan and Ambrose Knox Ramsey. He married Edolise Meyers. They had five daughters and one son. Ramsey died at the age of 68 on February 26, 1955 in Beaumont, Texas.
Ramsey lived most of his life in Gueydan, where he formerly served as mayor from 1917-1919. He was the owner of the Filmdom Theatre (Motion Pictures) of Gueydan. From 1908 to 1910, he was editor and publisher of the Church Point Democrat in Acadia Parish. From 1910-1912, he was editor and publisher of the Washington Progress, in Washington, Louisiana. In 1914, he was editor and publisher of the Gueydan News of Gueydan, Louisiana and The Kaplan Times of Kaplan, Louisiana. He also owned these two newspaper businesses.
Ramsey was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of the KC in Gueydan. He was also a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Beaumont.
This collection consists of biographical information of the Ramsey family, photographs, and pedigree charts of the Ramsey and Meyers families. Also included are bound volumes of the Church Point Democrat, 1907-1909
