Helen Vaughan Burdin Baker Simpson was a professor of History and Humanities and the Head of the Department of History and Geography at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She taught history, humanities, and philosophy courses over the span of her career at UL Lafayette. This collection contains Dr. Baker’s working files. These include materials from her history, humanities, and philosophy classes, student work, evaluations, and office files. The office files contain materials related to publishing, conferences, and organizations for which she was a member.

Daily diary of Frank Bardell, a small farmer in Illinois and southwest Louisiana. This collection consists of a digital copy of a diary kept by Bardell. He made daily entries from 1899 to 1910. Besides recording his activities each day, he often recorded the wages he was paid for various jobs and the prices he paid for goods. This collection was donated by Scott Longon of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Eli Barnett and his son A.L. Barnett operated a photography studio in Crowley, Louisiana. This collection includes 18,000 glass plates and 40,000 film negatives, mostly portraits. Approximately a third of the glass plates have been identified.

Walter Barousse was born May 19, 1918 in Church Point, LA, the youngest of seven siblings. He graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1938 with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was inducted August 3, 1943, where he served as a Staff Sergeant in General Omar N. Bradley’s company. This collection consists of three scrapbooks with photographs taken and collected by Staff Sergeant Barousse during World War II. There are also two certificates and a photograph of him. Lucien J. Savoie, III and Christine Savoie, Staff Sergeant Barousse’s nephew and grandniece respectively, donated the digital version of this collection.

The Bayou Teche Project was conducted by the Department of Architecture at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) during the Fall 1985 semester. Edward J. Cazayou, Head of the Architecture Department, and Professor Russel Dupuis worked with fourth and fifth year architecture students to study the soil, vegetation, fish and wildlife, climate, and history of the bayou. The group also looked at the bayou’s historical role as a transportation route.This collection consists of material related to the project. There are materials from students and faculty, government reports, and historical information such as maps, news clippings, and brochures.

Bec Doux was a weekly newspaper comic written in Cajun French by Ken Meaux (art) and Earl Comeaux (text). It was published for the first time in The Kaplan Herald in August 1969 and ran on a weekly basis for over twenty years. The collection includes photographs of Meaux and Comeaux, as well as the artwork for the comic strips.

Vernon Behrhorst, a geographer, was very active in the development of Louisiana water resources. In addition to being an Assistant Professor of Geography at University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), he was also a leader in many water resource associations. These associations include the Louisiana Intracoastal Seaway Association (LISA), the Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association (GICA), the Governor’s Office of Water Policy in Louisiana, and the National Ports and Waterways Institute at Louisiana State University. This collection contains Behrhorst’s papers related to the organizations, associations, and conferences for which he was involved. These papers include project proposals, correspondence, reports, memorandums, and materials from conferences. There are also photographs and audiovisual materials on reels and VHS. These papers were transferred from Tulane University’s Louisiana Research Collection to Dupré Library’s University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection by Leon Miller in 2016.

Dailey J. Berard founded Universal Fabricators, Inc. in 1980 based on his own inventions. UNIFAB is an industry leader in the custom fabrication of topside facilities, decks, jackets, equipment modules and other structures used in the development and production of oil and gas reserves. This collection contains mainly correspondence by Berard including many of his letters-to-the-editor printed in local papers. Also included are newspaper clipping, magazines articles about Berard and UNIFAB, and letters to Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Frances Love donated the collection.

Rod Bernard was a musician from South Louisiana, best known for being one of the pioneers of swamp pop music. He also worked at several radio stations, where he wrote many commercial scripts and deejayed. This collection contains material related to his music career, as well as his work in radio and TV. Dr. Shane K. Bernard is a music writer and historian who has written articles about Louisiana cultural life for many journals and liner notes for recordings. This collection contains mostly material on swamp pop music gathered initially as research for his M.A. thesis. It contains correspondence, photographs, magazine and newspaper articles, flyers, promotional materials, notes, and miscellaneous materials. Dr. Bernard donated this collection.

J. Rayburn Bertrand was the fifteenth mayor of Lafayette, serving from 1960 to 1972. He led Lafayette through a period of unprecedented growth and the turbulent civil rights era. This collection contains five volumes of scrapbooks while he was mayor of Lafayette, each having been microfilmed. Also included is a Bertrand family genealogy scrapbook that was compiled by Velia Bertrand Jr. who is a distant cousin of Bertrand. Henrietta Bertrand Boriskie donated the collection.

Al Bethard was a native of Louisiana. He worked at Edith Garland Dupré Library, University of Louisiana at Lafayette as the Head of Microforms. Retiring in 2018 after 47 years of work, he was one of the longest-serving employees of Dupré Library. This collection contains historical items that Mr. Bethard collected over the years. Items include newspaper articles, brochures, certificates, school items, and other miscellaneous materials. Al Bethard donated the collection.

Sylvia Segura Bienvenu is an educator on Acadian culture. She has worked for the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation, & Tourism, and the Acadian Memorial in Erath. This collection consists of personal papers, writings, class material, grants, evaluations, and presentations. There are also some media items and volumes of her lesson plans and evaluations. Sylvia S. Bienvenu donated the collection.

Billeaud Sugar Mill. Collection, 1946-1981, n.d.

The Billeaud Sugar Mill was built in Broussard, Louisiana by Martial Billeaud in 1872. The factory produced about four hundred tons of sugar cane daily. Billeaud sold the business to his children in 1914, which then became Billeaud Sugar Factory, Inc. With the help of the sugar boom in southwest Louisiana, the factory was very successful. This collection consists of the sugar mill office files, which include ledger books, daily reports, financial reports, land abstracts, publications, correspondence, minutes of meetings, general records, and much more. Pat St. Julien donated this collection.

The Boudreaux Family Genealogical Records are family records compiled by Joan S. Boudreaux. Mrs. Boudreaux was born in Baton Rouge and was a lifelong resident of Acadiana. The Boudreaux’s were some of the original Acadians who settled in Acadie in Nova Scotia before being exiled, eventually settling in South Louisiana. This collection contains genealogical charts, copies from books, various records, and books Mrs. Broudreaux used to compile the family genealogy. The family has been traced back to the year 920 AD. Her daughter, Lisa B. Menard, donated this collection.

This collection contains the genealogical research of amateur genealogist Clement Bourgeois, Jr. a native of Erath, Vermilion Parish. Bourgeois was a veteran of World War II, the postmaster of Erath (1953-1977), a photographer, and an amateur radio operator under the call sign N5ADK. Bourgeois’s primary focus in his research, was tracing his Bourgeois ancestors’ lineage back to France. However, he also aided family members and friends in their genealogical research.

Kenneth Francis “Kenny” Bowen was a three-term Democratic mayor of Lafayette, LA. He began a progressive administration that returned Lafayette to a Mayor-City Council form of government under a new city charter that remained the form of local government under consolidation with Lafayette Parish. This collection consists of oversize photographs and certificates, correspondence, reports, and general records while in office. Kenny Bowen donated this collection.

Jim Bradshaw is a journalist. He is a writer for the Daily Advertiser, Lafayette, LA. He has won journalism awards for spot news reporting, feature writing, and investigative reporting. This collection consists of his writings such as "Barbs and Gems", "The Reasoner Report", and the popular "History of Acadiana", supplement to the Daily Advertiser. Also included are newspaper clippings, publications, articles, photographs, etc. This collection was donated by Jim Bradshaw.

Elizabeth Brandon was a professor who specialized in the French language and Louisiana Cajun folklore. Dr. Brandon served as Professor of French and as chair of the French Department during her tenure at the University of Houston. Her research covered a wide range of topics revolving around Louisiana history, culture, and folklore. This collection contains Dr. Brandon’s working and personal papers. A large portion of the papers include written notes, in both English and French, on Louisiana history, people, cultures, folksongs, and dances.

Armand Brinkhaus was a Democratic former member of both the Louisiana House of Representatives (1968-1976) and the Louisiana State Senate (1976-1996). He is particularly known for his promotion of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL). Brinkhaus created the Dr. Armand L. and Julia Thoms Brinkhaus Fund to benefit the Dupré Library at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This collection consists of his working papers while in office. It also includes information on clubs and organizations that he was active in.

Alton Edmond Broussard was a newsman and professor of journalism. He taught at University of Louisiana at Lafayette for 37 years, and published many independent newspapers, including the Lafayette Guide. This collection contains the writings of Alton Broussard. The first volume is the entire Lafayette Guide newspaper. The two scrapbooks contain his articles from other newspapers, such as the Daily Advertiser. Three of Alton Broussard’s children, Mary Perrin, Sam, and Alton “Skip” II, and his son-in-law, Warren Perrin, donated this collection.

Pierre Otis “P.O.” Broussard was born in Abbeville, LA and lived in Lafayette, LA for his whole adult life. His family traces back to the pre-Civil War era. After serving in World War II, he worked for Amoco Production Co. for 39.5 years. He died August 6, 2002 in Lafayette. This collection contains materials pertaining to P.O. Broussard. Of particular interest are scrapbooks containing photographs he took or collected during World War II. Vaughan Baker, P.O. Broussard’s niece, donated the collection.

Robert F. Broussard and Edwin S. Broussard were brothers from rural Iberia Parish who served in the U. S. Senate, 1915-1918 and 1921-1933, respectively. Robert also served in the U. S. House of Representatives, 1897-1915. The family lived on a plantation near Loreauville, La. This collection was donated by Mrs. George and Dorville Broussard.

This collection consists of documents, Broussard genealogy, photographs, records, correspondence, publicity of the Broussard family, Abrom and Jack Kaplan and their Irrigation Company material, and Amanda Hanks material. There are also scrapbooks of Broussard family material from Vermilion Parish. Other scrapbooks include material on Abrom Kaplan (founder Kaplan, Louisiana), genealogy information, news clippings, typescript material, and others. Whitney Broussard donated the collection.

This collection contains unpublished music. Most of the compositions and arrangements by Mildred Ruth Brown are based on French folk songs. There are arrangements for piano, voice, and string orchestra and quartet. Many of the arrangements by George B. Brown are hymn tunes for organ or keyboard. There is also some vocal material.

Allen Budden owned a store in Palmetto, Louisiana called "Budden’s General Merchandise Store." This collection consists of photographs taken during the flood of 1927 in Palmetto. His brother-in-law “Swan” Williams, who was with the U.S. Coast Guard, took most of the photographs. They are digitized and copied to a CD. Donated by Bertha Reed, daughter of Mr. Chuck Budden.

Bussie was the only president of the Louisiana AFL-CIO ever had until he retired in 1997. He was president for 41 years. He was on the front lines of Louisiana politics. This collection contains a list of personal information, civic activities, personal memberships, Louisiana state governmental services, and labor services. There are also handwritten notes on his awards and recognitions, correspondence from 1997, a nomination form "Human and Civil Rights Awards Nomination Form" in 1998, and photocopies of newspaper clippings.
