Sylvia Segura Bienvenu is an educator who resides in New Iberia, Louisiana. She is the daughter of S.J. and Margherite Segura and is married to Harold G. Bienvenu, Jr.

Bienvenu first became involved with the Acadian culture in 1975, when she agreed to participate in a program at St. Martinville Primary School teaching French as a second language. This was the result of the newly formed Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL). In 1977, through a joint venture of CODOFIL and the French government, she had the opportunity to study for a month in France, followed by another month in Belgium the next year.

In 1989, Bienvenu became an adjunct professor at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), teaching reading methods in the College of Education. The course she taught, “Reading for the Culturally Different Learner”, which inspired research on local cultures of Cajuns. She also worked for the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation, & Tourism on Louisiana Voices, a collaboration between folklorists and educators to develop an educator’s guide for the study of cultures through sound educational techniques and technology.

In 1990, Bienvenu was approached by the president of Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, who asked her to help with writing grants for projects. She wrote and applied for many grants that were fully funded. Bienvenu also worked with Dr. Julia Fredericks of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and received a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities to present at Teaching Institute to teach educators about Acadians and their culture. This helped in assuring that the history of the Acadians would become part of the school curriculum in Acadiana. In 2015, she was inducted as a “Living Legend” at the Acadian Museum in Erath.

This collection consists of personal papers, writings, class material, grants, evaluations, and presentations. There are also some media items and volumes of her lesson plans and evaluations.

Sylvia S. Bienvenu donated this collection.
