2 feet; Oversize

Louise Judice Chargois was born on May 10, 1898. She married J.C. Chargois in 1914 and had three children: Altha Lee Kennedy Chargois Kennedy, J.C. Chargois, Jr. and Paul Chargois. Chargois earned her B.A. in Education and her M.A. in Education Administration & Supervision from University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette). She was a teacher, assistant principal and principal in Lafayette Parish. Chargois died on July 6, 1980 and is buried at Lafayette Protestant Cemetery, Lafayette, Louisiana.

Belonging to one of the pioneer families of Lafayette, Chargois established the Lafayette Founders Committee, an organization that obtained and published biographies of different aspects of Lafayette Parish. These biographies included sheriffs, chiefs of police, tax assessors, clerks of court and mayors.

This collection consists of materials collected by Chargois and her daughter, Altha Lee Chargois Kennedy. These include photographs of people and places during the early years of Lafayette, notes and letters from members of the Lafayette Founders Committee, publications, general records, and newspaper clippings.

Altha Lee Kennedy Ripley, daughter of Altha Lee Chargois Kennedy and granddaughter of Louise Judice Chargois, donated this collection.
