Dr. John Robert Meriwether was born on May 22, 1937 in Beaumont, Texas. He received both his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1958 and 1959 respectively. Receiving his doctorate in nuclear science from Florida State University in 1962, he also served as a postdoctoral research associate at University of California, Berkeley from 1962-1963.
Dr. Meriwether taught in the Physics Department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (formerly the University of Southwestern Louisiana) from 1967 to 2012. His research interests and fields of specialization include nuclear science, applied physics, environmental radioactivity, radioactive dating, experimental equipment design, art and science, and microscopy.
The collection includes materials pertaining to Dr. Meriwether’s study of nuclear physics, environmental science, and the Microspace: Science and Hidden Art collaborative exhibit. Also included are copies of Dr. Meriwether’s research, lantern slides and X-rays, class tour photographs, and correspondence regarding speaking bureaus and race relations. The bulk of the materials in this collection were created and gathered for the Culture of Man honors course, taught by Dr. Meriwether, between 1980 and 2009.
This collection was donated in 2012.
