Collection 30

Griffin, Harry L. (1883–1967). Papers, 1905–1964, n.d.

2 ½ feet

Dr. Harry Lewis Griffin was a long-time dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). He joined the faculty in 1912 when the school was named Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, teaching history and political science. He had been educated at West Virginia University and later obtained several graduate degrees from the University of Chicago. He became Dean of the College of Liberal Arts in 1921, a position he held until his retirement in 1953. Griffin Hall, the liberal arts building, was named after him. Dr. Griffin was especially active in the Lafayette Rotary Club. He wrote the script for the Lafayette Parish Centennial Pageant in 1923 and a history of the Attakapas Country (1959). He was married to Lucille Meredith Mouton. The couple had no children.

This collection consists of Dr. Griffin’s personal papers, including writings, speeches, correspondence, and materials he collected reflecting his interest in south Louisiana history, political science, education, and civic affairs. The material collected on local history consists mainly of newspaper clippings, including many written by Mario Mamalakis.

H.L. Griffin and Lucile M. Griffin donated this collection.
