Baudouin, Richard E., Jr. (1953–2000). Papers, 1970–2001, n.d.

11 feet; oversize

Richard E. Baudouin, Jr. was a longtime journalist and former editor of the Times of Acadiana weekly newspaper. He was born in New Orleans on October 4 1953, to Richard Baudouin, Sr. and Dolores Kemmler Baudouin. He married Ann Wakefield and they had two children, Katherine and Richard Baudouin, III. He graduated from Jesuit High School and Tulane University, where he served as editor of the student newspaper, Hullabaloo. He was a reporter for The Hammond Sun and The Houma Courier, and editor of New Business in Lafayette and Upstate in Shreveport. He was also editor of The Times of Acadiana from 1985 until 1996.

Shortly after Mr. Baudouin started working as editor at The Times, the newspaper became involved in coverage of the unfolding scandal of the Rev. Gilbert Gauthe, a Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of 11 Vermilion Parish boys. Despite threats of an advertising boycott, Mr. Baudouin and The Times pursued the story. He also had a role in developing the reference book series, "Grassroots Guide to the Louisiana Legislature."

When Mr. Baudouin left The Times in 1996, he worked briefly for the Klanwatch Project, an operation of the Southern Poverty Law Center that monitors hate groups. He returned to Lafayette to work as a political consultant for several legislative and local candidates in the Lafayette area, and was a political analyst for a Lafayette television station. He died at his home February 26, 2000.

This collection contains Mr. Baudouin’s personal papers, which are divided into two major series: personal files and working files. The personal files include certificates, correspondence, notes, postcards, and some education material. The working files include his writings, materials on education and politics, photographs, and audiovisual materials.
