Verret, J. Emile (1866–1965). Papers, 1933–1965, n.d.

J. Emile Verret was born 13 September 1886 on a farm near New Iberia, Louisiana. He graduated from New Iberia High School at seventeen years of age. He then attended Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) where he graduated in 1905. He later married Katherine Markham. He died 9 February 1965 and is interred in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Iberia, Louisiana.

Verret was a businessman and politician. In 1912, he was elected to Iberia Parish School Board. From 1914-1943 he served as president of the School Board. Thereafter, he became lieutenant governor of Louisiana from 1944-1948. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and president of the School Board Association, Elks Club, and Rotary Club of New Iberia.

This collection consists of correspondence, speeches, reports, and other miscellaneous materials relating to Verret’s official business as lieutenant governor.
