Social Media Policy

Purpose & Philosophy

This policy guides use of social media at Edith Garland Dupré Library, including main library accounts as well as affiliated departmental accounts such as those of Special Collections and the Ernest J. Gaines Center. All library social media activities are driven by our mission to support the teaching, learning, research and information needs of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and we follow the University’s Official Social Media Policy, Best Practices, and User Guidelines.

Library social media activities reflect our mission and values, including information access, knowledge creation, and discovery, cultural preservation, service, and fostering a learning environment that supports inquiry, critical thinking, and a diversity of perspectives in a respectful and civil context.

Engagement

We encourage patron questions, comments, and engagement on all library social media platforms. The library's social media accounts are monitored regularly for patron messages and questions Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Patrons who send questions to library's social media accounts while the library is closed, on holidays or during the evening or weekend hours should expect a reply during the next monitoring period.

The library treats questions sent to its social media accounts as extensions of the library's reference services, and responses will follow departmental policies for answering patron questions, including Dupré Library’s Reference & Research Services Policies and Procedures, as well as the Reference and User Services Association’s Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Services Providers. Library faculty will respond to questions and messages publicly within the platform when possible and privately as appropriate.

Public comments and questions posted to the library's accounts are subject to review by library faculty. We invite discussion and debate, but we may delete comments that violate copyright or privacy laws, or that is derogatory, ad hominem, libelous or commercial in nature.
