Visitors to Special Collections

Dupré Library welcomes visitors to use Special Collections materials. These materials include those identified in the Library Catalog by Louisiana Room, Rare Book Room, University Archives & Acadiana Manuscripts Collection, Ernest J. Gaines Center, Cajun & Creole Music Collection, U.S. Government Information or Microforms. Other uncataloged materials can be identified through guides available on the departments’ pages.

Most of the materials in Special Collections do not circulate and must be used in the reading area of the specific collection. The collections are closed to general browsing, and a valid ID (current validated University of Louisiana at Lafayette ID, driver’s license or other picture ID) is required. The exception is the U.S. Government Documents Collection, which is open to browsing and may be borrowed with a current validated University of Louisiana at Lafayette ID.

Be aware that most Special Collections departments observe limited hours of access. Visitors are encouraged to contact the department in advance in order to make the best use of their time while in the Library. Staff can advise researchers on the availability of materials and on other relevant collections, as well as hours of opening.
