Social Media Policy

Purpose & Philosophy

This policy guides the use of social media at Dupré Library, including main library accounts as well as affiliated departmental accounts such as Special Collections. All library social media activities are driven by the library's mission to support the teaching, learning, research, and information needs of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and we follow the University’s:

Library social media activities reflect the library's mission and values, including information access, knowledge creation, and discovery, cultural preservation, service, and fostering a learning environment that supports inquiry, critical thinking, and a diversity of perspectives in a respectful and civil context.

Engagement

We encourage user questions, comments, and engagement on all library social media platforms. Dupré Library's social media accounts are monitored regularly for user messages and questions Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Users who send questions to library's social media accounts while the library is closed, on holidays or during the evening or weekend hours should expect a reply during the next monitoring period.

Dupré Library treats questions sent to its social media accounts as extensions of the library's reference services, and responses will follow departmental policies for answering user questions, including Dupré Library’s Reference & Research Services Policies and Procedures, as well as the Reference and User Services Association’s Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Services Providers. Library faculty will respond to questions and messages publicly within the platform when possible and privately as appropriate.

Public comments and questions posted to the library's accounts are subject to review by library faculty. We invite discussion and debate, but we may delete comments that violate copyright or privacy laws, or that are derogatory, ad hominem, libelous or commercial in nature.
