Students
 
Yes, most of the Common Access Computer Laboratories funded by the Student Technology Enhancement Program (STEP) have computers equipped with current graphical user interface browsers and many of the labs have computers with spreadsheet software.
Is it better to browse the grid or to download it?
Students using current browsers with graphical user interfaces will usually fare better with browsing the online grid. Students who use text-based browsers or who use older graphical user interface browsers might wish to download the worksheets and view them with a spreadsheet application.
Where are the prices listed for each textbook?
As prices vary according to vendor, prices are not listed on the grid. It is best to inquire with individual vendors about specific textbook prices.
Where can textbooks be obtained?
As of Tuesday, March 21, 2000, local textbook vendors include the University Bookstore (Student Union Building, Room 107, 600 McKinley St), Follet's Bookstore (210 E St Mary Blvd), and Textbook Rentals (400 Gen Mouton Ave). Textbooks might be available through online vendors as well.
Is it better to buy a new or used textbooks?
Used textbooks usually cost less, but might have distracting marks from a previous owner (e.g., text underlined in pen or pencil, or text highlighted with marker). Another concern with used textbooks is that a previous owner might fail to include software CD-ROMs or diskettes that were originally packaged with a book. New textbooks usually cost more but are unlikely to have these issues.
Is it okay to obtain books before the first day of classes?
Students may obtain books at any time, however changes may occur between the time that students procure books and the first day of classes. Students are encouraged to attend the first day of classes and obtain books as outlined in course syllabi.
If the wrong book is obtained, can it be returned for a refund?
As refund policies vary according to vendor, it is best to inquire with individual vendors about specific refund policies.
Is book buyback still available at the end of each semester or session?

Faculty
What is the procedure for adding, deleting, or updating information on the grid?
The procedure may vary from department to department. In many cases, it will be appropriate for faculty members to download a textbook template, complete the fields (by computer or by hand), and submit the completed template (by electronic mail, floppy diskette, or printed pages) to the department head (or, school director).
In what way does the textbook template differ from the grid?
The template is approximately 96% smaller than the grid and downloads in dramatically less time.
Is the textbook template available in multiple formats?
Yes, the template is available in Excel, Word, Acrobat, and HTML formats.
Which software applications can be used to complete the template by computer?
The template in Excel format has been successfully tested with Microsoft Excel 97/2000 and Corel Quattro Pro 8/2000. The template in Word format has been successfuly tested with Microsoft Word 97/2000 and Corel WordPerfect 8/2000). The template in Acrobat format has been successfully tested with Adobe Acrobat (full version). The template in HTML format has been successfuly tested with Netscape Composer 4.7, Macromedia Dreamweaver 3.0, and Allaire HomeSite 4.0.1.

How much time is needed to download a template?
Download times range from ten seconds to sixty seconds per template depending on connection speed. In most instances, only one template (Excel, Word, or Acrobat) is needed.
Is it permissible to distribute the template to colleagues?
Distribution to colleagues is permissible if they are also given the address for this page or a printed copy of this page (to answer any questions).
Is it possible to include special notations about a textbook?
Yes, the last column of the grid is for notes. Any information that did not fit in previous columns may be included here.
How does a department head (or, school director) forward completed templates to the Textbook Clearinghouse?
Completed templates in Excel, Word, and Acrobat format may be sent as electronic mail attachments (textbooks@louisiana.edu) or as files on floppy diskette via interoffice mail (Barbara Flynn, Dupré Library). Printed pages may also be submitted via interoffice mail.
Is it necessary for a department head (or, school director) to merge the completed templates received from faculty members into a single template for the department (or, school)?
No, this is not necessary. Multiple templates can be forwarded and processed as easily as a single template.
Is a department head (or, school director) required to forward all completed templates in the same format?
No, a mixture of formats (Excel, Word, and Acrobat) and media (electronic mail attachment, diskette, printed pages) is acceptable.
Will sending completed templates as electronic mail attachments clog the electronic mail system?
The templates are relatively small and are unlikely to cause any problems for the electronic mail system. On the other hand, the grid should not be transmitted via electronic mail as it is approximately 25 times larger than the templates.

Vendors may submit a request to the Textbook Clearinghouse (see contact information at end of page).
General
What information is included in the textbook grid?
The grid has an opening page and departmental pages (one per department). The opening page contains a list of departmental abbreviations and corresponding names, as well as a list of abbreviations and corresponding descriptions used on the departmental pages. The departmental pages are constructed in table format with each row containing several fields of information for a single textbook. A header near the top of the page marks the various fields: department, course, section, author, title, edition, year of publication, publisher, international standard book number (ISBN), estimated enrollment, required/optional, date last modified, and notes.
Is it possible to distinguish between required and optional textbooks?
Yes, look for the column labelled R/O, then look for the presence of an R (Required), an O (Optional), or a blank (not specified) where the column intersects the row of a book.
Are textbooks listed by course number and professor?
Textbooks are listed by course number and section number when available. If the section number is unavailable, textbooks are listed by course number only.
When and where will updated information be posted?
Updated information will be posted on the Web as it becomes available during normal University days and hours of operation.
What is the procedure for downloading the workbook?
For most browsers with a graphical user interface, left-clicking on the hyperlink of the desired workbook (Fall, Spring, or Summer) will invoke an Open File or Save As dialogue box. In some cases it might be necessary to depress the shift key while right-clicking the hyperlink in order to invoke the Save As dialogue box.
How long will it take to download the workbook?
Download time will vary according to connection speed. For 56.6 modems, download time will be approximately 1 hour. For 28.8 modems, download time will be approximately 2 hours. For 14.4 modems, download time will be approximately 4 hours. Estimates are not available for other types of connections (e.g., DSL or cable modems).
Is a password needed in order to view the workbook?
No, if a Password dialogue box is encountered, left-click the Read Only button to view the workbook.
How can the downloaded workbook be viewed without MS Excel 97/2000?
Download and install the free Excel 97/2000 Spreadsheet File Viewer from the Microsoft Office Update site or use other spreadsheet software (e.g., Quattro Pro from Corel Corporation).
What is HTML?
HTML is an acronym for HyperText Markup Language, the lingua franca for publishing hypertext on the World-Wide Web (HTML @ W3C).
What is XML?
XML is an acronym for Extensible Markup Language, the universal format for structured documents and data on the Web (XML @ W3C).
What is a frames-capable browser?
It is a World-Wide Web browser that supports frames, a combination of two or more Web pages (or frames) displayed as one page. For the textbook grid, one of the frames acts as a menu making it possible to provide hyperlinks to all departments without returning to previous pages. If a browsers does not support frames, a warning is provided when attempting to browse the grid. Frames are supported in the current versions of many popular browsers.
