| The Special Collections department is composed of the Louisiana Room, the Rare Book Collection, the University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection, the Ernest J. Gaines Center, the Cajun and Creole Music Collection, the University Records Management Program, and the Microforms Room. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| The Louisiana Room provides access to materials pertaining to Louisiana, including books, periodicals, state government documents, genealogical materials, rare books, newspapers, and other special collections. Most Louisiana newspapers are housed in the Louisiana Room. Current issues are displayed in the reading area, and backfiles on paper or microfilm are also available in the department. The only exceptions are the Daily Advertiser (Lafayette), the Advocate (Baton Rouge) and the Times-Picayune (New Orleans), which are located in the Microforms Room. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| The University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection houses the archival records of the University starting in 1900. There are also over 300 collections of personal or family papers, business or organizational records, photograph collections, and much more related to the Acadiana region. Special strengths of the repository include the rice industry, Louisiana politics, Louisiana education, and women's studies. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Photographs of Southwestern Louisiana Institute from albums compiled by Presidents Edwin L. Stephens and Lethar E. Frazar between 1923 and 1840 are available online through the Louisiana Digital Library. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| The Rare Book Collection contains items published before 1900, and items that have intrinsic value such as limited editions. Strengths include horticulture, architecture, and French literature and history. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| The Ernest J. Gaines Center is an international center for scholarship on Ernest Gaines and his work. The center honors the work of UL Lafayette's Writer-in-Residence Emeritus and provides a space for scholars and students to work with the Gaines papers and manuscripts. Born near New Roads, Louisiana, Gaines based his award-winning novels on the African American experience in the rural South. His works include The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1971) and A Lesson Before Dying (1993), both later produced as award-winning films. Gaines' generous donation of his papers and manuscripts and some artifacts provide the foundation for the Center's collection. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| The Cajun and Creole Music Collection consists of commercial recordings published since 1928 of the music of the Cajuns and Creoles of Louisiana. The recordings in the collection represent the history, influences and styles of indigenous music of the local cultures. Some of the musical styles or genres represented include traditional Creole and Cajun music, zydeco, swamp pop, and swamp blues. Media formats include both digital and analog recordings: 78s, 45s, LPs (33 rpm), cassette tapes, CDs, VHS tapes and DVDs. Video recordings include documentary, instructional and educational films, as well as motion pictures that include Louisiana music and musicians. The expanding collection also contains books, photographs, and artifacts. The collection is open to the public for listening, viewing, and research during regular Louisiana Room hours. Several audio-visual stations are available. The library encourages the use of the collection and offers scheduled orientation sessions. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| The Microforms Room houses the Dupré Library's collection of materials on microform, including back issues of newspapers, periodicals and a variety of other materials. The department has machines for viewing all formats of microforms, and for printing from microfilm and microfiche. Current issues of the Daily Advertiser (Lafayette), the Advocate (Baton Rouge) and the Times-Picayune (New Orleans), as well as newspapers from outside the state, are also available in the Microforms Room. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Materials in these collections are identified in the public catalog by "Louisiana Room", "Rare Book Room", "University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection", "Ernest Gaines Center", "Cajun and Creole Music Collection", or "Microforms." Materials in these collections must be used in their respective reading rooms, and do not circulate. The stacks in the Louisiana Room, the Rare Book Collection, the University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection, the Gaines Center, and the Cajun and Creole Music Collection are closed to general browsing. A valid ID is required to use these materials. | ||||||||||||||||||||
