Edith Garland Dupre Library Caffery Competition

University of Louisiana at Lafayette students are invited to participate in the 2005/2006 Edith Garland Dupré Library Caffery Competition sponsored by Edith Garland Dupré Library and the University Library Committee. Five hundred dollars for the recipient of the Jefferson Caffery Research Award is provided annually by a fund that Ambassador and Mrs. Jefferson Caffery established in 1967. The competition encourages University of Louisiana at Lafayette students to conduct scholarly research utilizing primary source materials held in the special collections area of Dupré Library.

The Archives and Special Collections of the Library contain materials of relevance and interest to serious students from all academic departments of the University. Students interested in submitting a paper to the Caffery Competition should visit the Jefferson Caffery Reading Room on the third floor of Dupré Library to review the Archives and Special Collections catalog. Dr. I. Bruce Turner, Head of Special Collections, and the staff of the Louisiana Room are available for consultation.

The competition is open to both graduate and undergraduate students. Guidelines and further explanations of the competition are available in the Jefferson Caffery Reading Room of Dupré Library. The deadline for entries for this year's competition is March 3, 2006. Papers are to be submitted to the Library Director's Office, Room 215, Dupré Library.

A panel consisting of the University Library Committee, the Curator of Archives and Special Collections, and others designated by the panel will review and judge the competition. Papers will be judged on quality of research, clarity and writing skill, and the extent of the author's use of source materials in Dupré Library's Special Collections. Provided there is a paper deemed worthy of the award, the winner will be announced in April 2006. Recent winners are:
2005 Hurling, Angelique R. "Second Home: German POWs at Camp Livingston, Louisiana and Its Branch Camps, 1943-1946."
2004 Rivet, Eric. "Training for War, Preparing for Peace: The Navy V-12 Program at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, 1943-1946."
Honorable mention: Brown, Yvonne. "Tolerance and Bigotry in Southwest Louisiana: The Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s."
