Collection 79
Woman’s Club of Lafayette. Records, 1897-1976, 1997, n.d.
3 feet, 4 inches

The Woman’s Club of Lafayette was organized in 1897 by Mrs. T. M. Biossat as the Five O’Clock Tea Club. The group was dedicated to charity, personal improvement, and sociability. It existed under several names during the early years: The Ladies Tea Club and Women’s Literary Club. The club was formed to study literature, political economy, and many other interests. In 1901 it joined the State Federation of Women’s Clubs. Over the years the club supported scholarships and did a lot of work for Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute/Southwestern Louisiana Institute/University of Southwestern Louisiana.

This collection contains scattered early records and minutes, yearbooks, scrapbooks, photographs, and newspaper clippings of the Woman’s Club of Lafayette. It also has material from other women’s organizations such as the Tojours Fidele, L’Heure d’Amitie, etc.

Note: In a large part of this collection, the organization is called the Woman’s Club of Lafayette. However, it is occasionally named the Women’s Club of Lafayette.
